Help! I am lost! I am afraid I will make some drastic mistakes and screw up my character by the choices I made! That seems to be the fear most people have when playing a new game. First of all, don’t worry. Anything that you “make a mistake” on is not something that will devastate you in playing the game. At worst, if you do not like the choices you have made, you can make another character. The best thing to do if this happens is to make another character and send all your hard earned belongings, by mail to the new character. Anything you can’t send, sell and send the remaining cash to the new character. The good news about doing this is that you will start off with some better stuff than your original character did. So do not be afraid to make a mistake. Nothing in World of Warcraft is permanent. Remember, you are only a newbie until you have learned a few basic things.
Choosing a Server
To start World of Warcraft, you will have to choose a server. Since you are new to the game, I would suggest a normal server. On a normal server, you can turn off PVP (Player versus Player). On a PVP server you are always in PVP mode. That means when you are level one, any enemy player can come and stomp on you. While this is great fun for the level 80 character, it can be frustrating to a new player. Stick to the normal server where you can play without being attacked by other players.
Race and Class
For a new player it really does not matter what class you play in WoW. They all handle very simply and you will find that race is much the same. Race may give you a small edge early in the game but as you level up, you will find that it does not make as much of a difference at higher level.
No matter which starting point you start from in World of Warcraft, there are people around to give you quests. Of course, if you are playing a horde character, maybe people is not quite accurate. Talk to people to get quests. Once you have the quests, do what you are told to do. Most of the quests have you either killing or gathering things from killing. Go do what you can to achieve the quest goals and receive your awesome rewards!
All loot is good loot, after all, if you can’t use it, you can sell it. Here is where I will make a huge suggestion about WoW. Do not buy items in the early part of the game. Any money spent will be a waste. The items you can buy in the store will quickly be replaced by items that are found and given as rewards.
Fight alone when fighting monsters in World of Warcraft. You will get more rewards this way. There are only two reasons to join forces with others. One is that you are struggling to complete a quest and need some bait, er, I mean help killing something. The second is another player in your faction (Horde or Alliance) keeps stealing all the kills and good stuff before you can get to it. Since you can’t kill someone in the same faction as you, you are stuck joining forces. This will enable you to get some of the quests done quickly but you will gain less loot, experience, and cash.
A guild in WoW is a group of players that help each other in the game. Be careful though, even though everything seems rosy, putting all of your good items in the guild bank can be risky if you do not know the other players in your guild. Make sure you have played with the players for a while before joining a guild. This way you are sure that the players in your guild are fun and helpful. After all, you are playing World of Warcraft to have fun, so make sure the people you hang out with in the game are fun too.
Save your PVP for when you are familiar with the game. Fighting other players is fun but if you are not fast on the controls, you will die a lot until you get better at World of Warcraft. Also, never go alone to PVP. Once you kill someone, he will get help from anyone he can find and, if you are in enemy territory, even a level 80 character can be overwhelmed by sheer numbers.
Skills in the Game
Skills are very important and you will need to have money in order to learn your skills. Your class skills will give you new abilities to fight, heal, or do many other things. These are critical to survival. There are also the trade skills. Be sure to choose your trade skills wisely. You only get to have two trade skills. For instance, if you are playing a warrior, I would suggest mining for your gathering skill and blacksmithing as your production skill. This would not work well for a warlock as most of the items made by these skills, he would not be able to use. Another thing to note in World of Warcraft is that you can get secondary skills, such as cooking or fishing. Do not underestimate these skills. There is many a time that fishing and cooking gave can give enough food to heal you and keep you alive. Another thing to note is that fishing and the gathering skills get you free things. These can be made into things to be sold if you are hurting for money, or they can be sold as is.
Playing World of Warcraft
Most of all have fun. If someone is bothering you in WoW, then ignore that person. If you find a fun group of people to hang out with, be sure to befriend them. If they are all in a guild, join them. If not, perhaps start a guild of your own. The fun in any online game is that others are around to join forces or fight against. World of Warcraft is a continuously developing game that grows with the gaming community. So start up the game and get lost, make mistakes, die a few times and learn. My last bit of advice is there is no better way to learn how to play the game than actually playing it.
