We all know how the road and our sidewalks can get during these colder months and that is why I urge everyone to buy a bag of salt. In some states it is a requirement by law to keep both your driveway and walkways by your house free of ice and obstruction. If you don’t you could be fined or worse if someone gets injured on your property you could be sued. Make sure that you put the ice out at night and during the day so that the ice does not accumulate during the night and resurface again in the morning. This allows for less work throughout the day and allows no accumulation throughout the day to occur.
Make sure also that you have the proper tools for the winter time and know what the weather is going to be like. If you know what is coming, then you will know when to lay down salt for the approaching storm. You need the proper type of shovel and preferably one that is more rubber based. This way your driveway and walkway won’t be harmed in shoveling and the shovel won’t be as heavy as a metal one and won’t cause injury if it is dropped. Not only that, but you can move the ice and the snow much easier than with the metal shovel.
Make sure also that you don’t pile the snow on both sides of your driveway and rather move it as far off the driveway as possible, because if the wind gets bad, all the snow you just shovel off your driveway will end up right back on it. There is a proper way of shoveling that you should do so that your back does not get injured in the process. You need to make sure when shoveling that you use your legs and not your back to lift the snow. If you have problems clearing your driveway, you can always call a company to clear it for you and their prices will vary. The best thing you can do is clear it after every snowfall and salt underneath after each shoveling. This will prevent the snow from piling up in a large amount on your driveway and the salt will prevent ice from forming underneath the snow, which can be very hazardous if you’re not careful and can make the job much more difficult.
The last and most important thing you need to remember is to wear the proper footwear and clothes while working outside in the cold. Remember to breathe slowly and pace yourself, this is not a race. Take breaks in between working and make sure that you are eating and drinking enough. If you start to sweat, you should stop immediately, because sweating in cold weather is not a good sign and can lead to hypothermia and fatigue. Make sure that you wear a well insulated jacket and a hat that covers your ears. You should purchase insulated boots that have good soles for grip and wear two pairs of socks to keep your feet isolated. Above all be safe and watch out for black ice while you are working, salt along the way to prevent slipping and falling. The last thing you need is to be injured doing a job outside.
