Trainer Rick Dutrow’s horse, Winslow Homer with Ramon Dominguez aboard, edged out betting favorite Jackson Bend in the Holy Bull Sweepstakes at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Florida. The Holy Bull Sweepstakes is the first race of the year that usually begins the process of narrowing candidates for the Kentucky Derby.
The Holy Bull Sweepstakes is named after a massive Grey colt, Holy Bull that dominated in his era. Appropriately, Winslow Homer is a grey horse that may not have dominated in his first win but did make an impressive run through Homboykris and Thank U Philippe to pull off a three quarter length win over favored Jackson Bend.
Dominguez kept Winslow Homer just off the pace hanging behind pace setters Homeboykris and Thank U Philippe. Entering the home stretch, Dominguez found a gap between the two and blasted through it. As Winslow Homer broke for the finish line, Jackson Bend was making a huge drive for the line also and Winslow Homer held him off by three quarters to take the win.
The payoffs: Winslow Homer paid $9.60 to win, $4.60 to place and $3.60 to show. Jackson Bend paid $3.40 and $2.60 and William’s Kitten paid $4.40. Winslow Homer went off as second favorite and Jackson Bend was the favorite as he entered the gate.
According to the Las Vegas Hilton Superbook, Winslow Homer before the race was a 75-1 shot as a future bet to win the Kentucky Derby, look for those odds to drop with the Holy Bull Sweepstakes win. Other notables on the Las Vegas Futures for the Kentucky Derby that participated in the Holy Bull Sweepstakes were: Homboykris at 75-1,Thank U Philippe at 150-1 and Jackson Bend at 30-1. The early favorite for the Kentucky Derby is Looking at Lucky at 10-1.
Other horses on the Las Vegas Hilton Superbook Kentucky Derby Futures included , Aikenite at 50-1, Piscitelli at 125-1 and Litigation Risk at 200-1. Aikenite went off as second favorite along with eventual winner Winslow Homer. The Holy Bull Sweepstakes is relatively new in the Kentucky Derby preps so don’t get too enamored with Winslow Homer yet.
The Fountain Of Youth Stakes on February 20th, are next up in the preparations for the Kentucky Derby. Rick Dutrow has already made his intentions known to enter Winslow Homer and look for Jackson Bend and William’s Kitten to improve on their performances. Watch for Aikenite to either contend in the Fountain of Youth Stakes or eliminate himself from consideration for the Kentucky Derby entry list.
