Freelance writing is one of fastest-growing businesses in the United States. There are an increasing number of people pursuing freelance writing as a full time career. Sadly, there are many writers who never climb out of the ranks of poverty to succeed at freelance writing. These writers never truly make the level of success in the work of writing.
Why do some writers succeed and make large amounts of money and other do not? Why do some writers never find a decent level of success at writing? Why do some writers never become full time freelancers?
While there are many answers to these burning questions, these are just a few of the possibilities.
Lack of planning
Many times people embark on the journey of freelance writing without any type of planning. Writing requires careful planning and constant evaluation. Becoming a freelance writer is like starting a new business. There must be an effective plan in place to genuinely succeed. Without a plan, most freelance writers fail within the first year. Writers go broke because they simply fail to plan.
Lack of inspiration
Some freelance writers wait for the inspiration to strike them before they actually begin writing. Writing is less about inspiration and a lot about hard work. Writing requires writers to work hard and put in long hours. Writing is definitely not for the lazy or the faint of heart. Inspiration comes from actually writing. Writers gain ideas and create most often when in the midst of crafting something new. Inspiration should never be a problem for a freelance writer. Create an idea log or a creative journal. Log ideas as a they come along and take some time with it. These ideas will become the sources for new articles and even more writing.
Lack of diversity
Many freelance writers get stuck on one type of writing and focus all of their attention in that specific area. This becomes an incredible mistake. The writer that places all of their efforts in one area often finds themselves out of work quickly. Writers need to tap various markets and opportunities to generate income. While trying to write the next masterpiece in fiction, write some magazine articles, some general copy work or something else to help pay the bills.
Writers need to understand that there are some basic requirements for being a writer. The grasp of language, structure and style are a huge help. However, there are some basic things that have little to do with talent that cause writers to stumble. Be careful to proofread all of the articles and pieces sent for submission. Simple mistakes can be incredibly costly. Check for spelling and grammar errors, check for basic clarity and edit the piece before submission.
There are many other reasons why writers fail in the task of freelancing. The reality is that it happens more often than many care to admit. Writes fail because they fail to adequately plan. Writers lose their ability to gain income when they lack diversity and wait for inspiration to strike. Writers also cause themselves more problems when they submit low quality work. Many times freelance writing success comes from attention to the small details.
