First let me say that the entire idea of trying terrorists in civilian courts is just crazy. Can you imagine lining up German or Japanese soldiers during World War II? It’s ludicrous but we appear to be stuck with it. The terrorists may be at war with us but President Obama doesn’t seem to understand that. In fact he can’t even bring himself to say the phrase “War On Terror”
Bring them terrorists on down to Texas, we’ll get it done
So if we have to have these stupid trials somewhere why not stack the deck a little bit and bring them on down here to Texas? Texas juries are more than happy to hand out death penalty sentences. More importantly, we actually carry them out more than all the other states combined.
Now I know these are going to be federal charges so using state statistics isn’t a direct comparison but the important thing is to get Texans on the jury. Bring them terrorists down here and we’ll get the job done.
I’ve been on a Texas jury for a capital case and trust me – that jury was out for blood. Mine wasn’t a death penalty case but two other people I work with were on death penalty juries as well. We all convicted and two people are death row and one is away for life.
Of course it will be up to Obama to actually get the executions done which we all know probably won’t happen. Hopefully we’ll take care of that in 2012.
For the best chance it has to be Houston
As much as I’d like to volunteer my home (Dallas), I’ll have to let Houston have first crack at it. According to the death row statistics from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Harris county leads the state in death penalty sentences with 280. Dallas only has 98 and Fort Worth would add 67.
Note: The death row statistics are by county. Who knows why they did this but the city of Houston is in Harris County not Houston County. Houston County is in between Dallas and Houston.
Security? Not a problem
The big concern New York seems to have is security. A trial there would beg for some sort of terrorist attack. You just let them try that down here. New York citizens are mostly defenseless because their state and local governments don’t seem to like the idea of their subjects owning guns.
But Texas? Believe me, the stereotype is true on this one. Texas has guns, lots of them. Heck, my four year old daughter has her own pink rifle! Their terrorist buddies wouldn’t stand a chance if they tried something down here. Of course there is always the possibility of them escaping custody but it’s varmint season year round in Texas so bring ’em on down.
