Figuring out what your major should be in college is one of the most difficult things that college students come across. Being a college student myself, this is something that I am very aware of. Some college students go into college knowing exactly what they want to do and others have no idea. However, most college students change their major at least once before they graduate. Here are some things that you can do to help you decide which major you should choose.
Think about your talents and hobbies. You may not realize it but your talents and hobbies have a big impact on what you are able to do for your job. Write down each one that you think of, even if it sounds insignificant. Many different talents combined can lead you in the right direction for a job that you may not even know exists. Once you have your list, start writing down things that you can do with these talents. Write down all the jobs that you can think of that relate to these talents. For example, if you enjoy working with your hands, you could write down “working with cars” or even “drawing”. Just put down anything and everything that you can think of that relates to working with your hands. Do this for every talent or hobby that you wrote down.
Now that you have a full list of every job that you are capable of doing, it’s time to narrow it down a little bit. Cross out all of the jobs that you know you would not like doing. You don’t want to end up in a career that you can’t stand. You want to spend your life doing something that you truly enjoy. That’s why I said to write down your talents and hobbies because these are usually the things that you enjoy doing. Once you cross out the jobs you don’t want to do, you will have a list of jobs that you might like to do.
Now you will have to do a little research. Look up what each job requires, how much money someone in that position makes, how competitive it is, and what kind of degree you will need to obtain each kind of job. Pick the jobs that meet your lifestyle and what you believe you would truly enjoy. Then, create a list of the majors that are related to that field. For example, if you saw that in order to be a Spanish teacher, you need a Spanish education degree, write that down.
Now that you have a list of majors, you need to go see an academic advisor. Many college students don’t realize the importance of going to speak to an advisor. They are there for a reason and they are very good at what they do. They will be able to give you the guidance you need, guidance that no one else would be able to give you. They can also give you more ideas of careers and fields that you could go into and if you were unsure of what to major in for a specific job, they will be able to tell you. If one advisor wasn’t able to help you, you can always go see someone else. Or if you know you are interested in a specific major and you want to find out more about it, you can go to that specific major academic advisor. Every major has its own advisor or several advisors.
Remember that if your college doesn’t have the major that your heart is really set on, you might have to transfer. Don’t settle for something less than what you really want to do. But make sure you really think about it before you transfer. I already transferred and I wish I hadn’t because in many ways I feel that I was better off where I was. If you think you need to transfer, make sure you bring that up when you are speaking to your advisor. Good luck!
