Avon products have always been a part of my life, from my teen years right up to adulthood. I’ve been both a customer and an Avon Lady. Women take on these enterprises for various reasons, so I thought I’d talk about my reasons and what it meant to me at different points in my life.
When I was a teen, my favorite Aunt Mary was an Avon Lady. She use to come to our house and show me and my Mom all the latest beauty products. The thing I loved the most was the little samples she would give us in order to try out the products. There were little vials of cologne, as well as makeup samples. And we tried them all. My Mom and I were great customers for Aunt Mary.
Since Aunt Mary regularly visited our house, I was able to get a few extra orders for her now and then from a couple of our neighbors and from my friends. Aunt Mary appreciated the extra orders and made sure I was compensated by giving me some great products for free. She was a savvy businesswoman. Everyone loved having their purchases delivered personally right to them so “selling” was easy. Back then, my favorite item was the Honeysuckle Cologne Splash, followed by the Lily of the Valley Cologne Splash. To this day, the smell of both honeysuckle and lily of the valley bring fond memories to my mind.
Shortly after I was married, my Aunt Mary passed away. It wasn’t until a few years later that I was able to reconnect to Avon. My husband and I moved to another state and into a rural area. I had two small children and didn’t work outside the home in those days, so it got very lonely. One day, an Avon Lady rang my doorbell. I invited her in and we instantly became good friends. As a matter of fact, she was the one who convinced me to become an Avon Lady myself. She told me that Avon had lots of territories out our way that needed coverage, so I timidly made the phone call to inquire about becoming an Avon Lady.
I started out with a great manager named Tom who taught me how to start my own little business, and he gave me good advice and lots of pointers in order to succeed. I was so excited when I received my first order book, along with my other supplies. I am a super organized person, so this was right up my alley. I was able to deliver Avon books to the houses in my territory, and I received orders via phone or in person. Avon may work a little differently today, but that was how it was done back then.
Every two weeks, I sent in my order. Delivery day was a fun day. A huge truck would pull up to my house and drop off boxes of my supplies. I loved opening up the boxes since the fragrance coming out of them was beautiful. Everything smelled so good. I had a great time putting all the orders into little bags, along with an order slip, and I always gave out free samples to my customers. I remembered how much those samples meant to me when my Aunt Mary gave them out.
I would call my customers and made arrangements to deliver their orders. Some people just wanted their orders dropped off, and others liked me to stop in their homes and visit for a while, which gave me the opportunity to show them the new items Avon was selling. Many of my customers were other young moms like me, so I was able to bring along my kids who played with their kids, so it was a fun get together for all of us. It helped me with not being so lonely living out in the country. Other customers were elderly retired ladies who seemed to look forward to my stopping in to see them. I’d visit with them and we chatted and they would ooh and ahh over my babies and inevitably they would purchase some Avon products. It always amazed me how much red lipstick elderly women seemed to go through.
Twelve years went by before I decided to go back to work in an office and I gave up my Avon lady title. There were several Avon ladies in my office, so I was able to continue purchasing the products I knew and loved over the years.
All in all, I’d have to say it was a great experience being an Avon Lady and selling their wonderful products. I will admit that I did spend a good majority of my profits on buying products for myself, but my number one reason for becoming an Avon Lady wasn’t to make a lot of money. It was more about getting out of the house, meeting people, and having a small business to organize. I also enjoyed going to the Avon meetings and getting to know all the other Avon ladies in my area. Some were involved in it to make money, and they did, and others were like me who had other needs they were fulfilling. So if being an Avon Lady sounds like something you might enjoy, give it a try. I view my years as being one with many fond memories.
