Mc Donald’s is the biggest franchise in the world. It has been synonymous with cheap foods and convenience. However, Mc Donald’s has not been known as a place to get healthy foods. Mc Donald’s has been fighting to change its image. It has been trying to put what some people consider as healthy foods such as cereals, salads, juices, etc. Mc Donald’s has also been advertising that it has been using healthy meat produces, exact calories of all the foods and drinks it provides. It seems Mc Donald’s has been quite successful with its campaign because people are starting to buy all those healthy product.
Mc Donald’s is not just satisfied with its current domination as a cheap and convenient eatery. Recently, Mc Donald’s has been making a serious threat to cafes, especially, Starbucks. The question is now, should cafes, especially, Starbucks, start to worry?
My recent visit to one of Mc Donald’s in Austin, Texas shows that Mc Donald’s does have potential in making big threat to Starbucks. This particular Mc Donald’s site on West Parmer, Austin, Texas shows how Mc Donald’s is starting to dabble in the area it has never been to before. Mc Donald’s is trying to create an image that it is not only convenient to eat at Mc Donald’s, but also, it is hip to eat and drink at Mc Donald’s.
First, Mc Donald’s has been making a variety of hot and cold coffee products. Mc Donald’s even has its own Frappe which is definitely it is trying to compete directly with Starbucks popular Frappucino. In order to be hip, Mc Donald’s is now offering free WIFI to all customers. This is definitely a changing image from a takeout fast-food place into a more sit-in cafe. Mc Donald’s also provides the site with a lot of electric plugs so that people will stay longer, hopefully, order more foods and drinks.
The decoration inside has a very amazing decoration given Mc Donald’s is not reputed to be a beautiful eating place. The site is clean, it has beautiful standing window with flowers and watery image flowing from it. On the side, there is even a fake fireplace. To make staying even more enjoyable, it plays soothing enjoyable jazz music.
All these new images are definitely a direct competition to Starbucks, In some area such as the fake fireplace, standing watery window decoration and soothing jazz music, Mc Donald’s is doing so much more wonderfully than Starbucks.
These all sound flawless to be a nice cafe. However, there is one big problem. Mc Donald’s does not seem to be concerned with the quality of the coffee and what it serves. It has no special servers to be the full-time coffee makers. Customers can also tell how inexperienced the staffs when they are making the coffee. Additionally, the liquid chocolate Mc Donald’s uses is completely not industry-standard. All these flaws clearly won’t impress much to coffee drinkers.
Mc Donald’s has a lot to learn if it wants to be more serious into cafe business. Mc Donald’s needs to hire a qualified barista, use good industry-standard coffee and its coffee’s chocolate, whipped creams, etc. For now, Starbucks can a bit relaxed while we, as customers, enjoy our new choice of enjoyable cafe.
