Flying on a plane can be a fun experience as you await your travel destination, but it can also be filled with unpleasant moments. People fly on planes for business trips and vacations all the time and usually do not end up getting sick. If you are going to be flying on a plane and are worried about the potential of getting sick, there are some things you can do before your trip and during the trip to help ease the risk. If you implement some simple steps into your flying experience you will be less likely to catch an illness from the plane.
One of the best ways to prevent illness during a planned trip on a plane is to not procrastinate. Stress is one of the most common causes of illness on planes and this could be due to worrying about getting ready for the trip. Do not procrastinate when it comes to packing and getting everything together for your trip on the plane, make sure you have plenty of time to pack your bags and get your carry-on items together. Being stressed out is likely to occur if you wait until the last second to pack for your plane ride and can result in being sick before or during the plane ride. Give yourself a couple weeks to do laundry, pack your clothing, get your carry-on bag ready and make sure you have packed everything you will need during your trip. If it would help you can make a checklist of all essential items you will need to take with you such as a computer or cell phone and cross the items off as you get them packed. By thinking ahead and planning for your trip well in advance, you will decrease your chances of becoming stressed out and getting ill on the plane.
It is also important you do not worry about the plane ride itself, which can cause you to become sick on the plane. Since September 11, 2001, and the attacks that occurred, more people seem to worry about their plane ride and the safety of being on an airplane. The only thing you can really do is know that extra precautions have been implemented since that day to help prevent similar situations. Everyone gets scared being on an airplane due to the movies we have seen that show a plane losing an engine or getting hijacked but do not worry too much about this. Getting all worked up over the “what if” when you go on an airplane is only going to make you worry yourself to the point of becoming really ill and nervous. A chance of dying in an airplane crash is significantly lower than the chance of dying from an automobile accident so it is important to not make yourself sick over nothing. You should be a little concerned over the plane and should still know where the exits are on the airplane just to be prepared. The first time you take a trip on an airplane you will be more scared than someone who has done it a million times before and it is only natural to be nervous, but just be aware of your surroundings and you will be fine.
Before your trip on an airplane you should also eat regularly, get plenty of exercise and sleep well to ensure you will not get sick during your plane ride. Make sure the week prior to your airplane trip you have slept at least 7 or 8 hours per night and have gotten plenty of exercise. Sleeping well and exercising before your trip will help reduce your chance of getting an illness by boosting your immune system. Another way to boost your immune system so you will not get ill on the airplane is to get proper nutrition by eating regularly. Make sure you have a lot of fruits and vegetables as well as foods with antioxidants in them. Being well-nourished is just another way to boost your immune system and create a barrier that will protect you from an illness on an airplane.
While you are on the airplane it is also important to wash your hands after touching things on the airplane or going to the bathroom. On an airplane there are many different germs and potential diseases floating around due to being in cramped small seats with someone right next to you. Make sure you wash your hands after you get done in the bathroom which is something you should do no matter where you are at. Washing your hands is a good way to prevent germs from getting into your body and making you ill. Washing your hands is the single most important way you can prevent illness while traveling on an airplane. In the event you can not wash your hands right away on the airplane, make sure you do before you have any contact with your mouth or before you eat any foods.
To help avoid getting an illness on the airplane you should also pack some nutritional snacks for your flight. Airplane food is never that good and usually is full of carbohydrates and starch which can lead to overeating, so be sure to pack some healthy food choices. Instead of grabbing that bag of chips or that candy bar from the airplane you can eat some fresh fruit or crackers that you have packed for your trip. If you have a long flight and need to rest you should also avoid caffeinated products because they can make you nervous and anxious from all of the caffeine. Take some green tea with you or decaffeinated coffee packets so you can still drink something good without worrying about the lasting effects from the caffeine.
Sitting for a long period of time in a place like an airplane can also cause you to become ill or end up with a blood clot. In order to avoid getting ill on your airplane flight you should try to walk up and down the aisles once in a while. If you do not have an aisle seat where this is a possibility then you should be moving your legs around every hour. Do some simple leg exercises like pretending you are on a bicycle or move your legs like you are practicing dancing steps to help the circulation of blood get to your legs. Be sure to drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated also and that can help circulation throughout your body which will also prevent clotting or other medical conditions. Drinking plenty of water is a way to keep the body nourished and hydrated while also providing you with a reason to get out of your seat every once in a while when you have to go to the bathroom.
Another way to prevent an illness while on an airplane is to remember to dress as comfortable as you can for your flight. Make sure you are wearing loose clothing like sweatpants and a sweatshirt or stretchy types of materials. Try to wear simple clothing that does not have a lot of metal on it or an outfit that has a belt because of the metal detectors. By wearing a simple outfit you will be more comfortable on the plane but will also prevent a hassle trying to get through the metal detectors. Wearing comfortable and loose clothing will also allow for better blood circulation throughout your body which can prevent you from getting a serious medical condition such as a clot in your leg.
