Goats are delightful and playful additions to many barnyards across the country. Coming up with a fitting name for your new caprine companion is important, as many goats live to be a decade old or more. Here are some suggestions to get you started!
1) Black Sabbath
The perfect name for a solid black or dark-colored goat, Black Sabbath is the name of a heavy metal band that often features horned men on their covers.
In the world of Harry Potter, the Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore had a brother named Aberforth who was tried and convicted of placing “inappropriate charms upon a goat.” In the movies, Aberforth’s bar in Hogsmeade often had goats depicted running in and out of it.
While it may not really be true that goats eat everything they can get their mouths around, they do seem to eat a lot more than you’d think they could by looking at them! Name your always-hungry goat after the brand of vacuum guaranteed to suck everything out of your carpet.
Pan is recognized as the horned god of mischief and playfulness in the ancient Greek religion. Pan is most often depicted as having the horns of a goat and the lower body of a goat, sort of like a goat version of a centaur. This is a great name for the young, playful buck or wether who likes to kick up his heels and have a good time.
Puck is the spunky and mischievous fairy in William Shakespeare’s play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” who is often portrayed by actors wearing goat horns.
Aries is the name of one of the constellations of the Zodiac, which depicts a ram lying down in the night sky. The sign of Aries in astrology is considered to be a very masculine sign, ruled by fire and the planet Mars. The name Aries would be perfect for a red-brown colored goat, or for a goat who is very “bucky” and manly in attitude.
Capricorn is the other constellation in the night sky that forms the shape of a goat, often a water goat but also can be depicted as a terrestrial goat. The Capricorn is considered to be a very feminine sign, considered by astrologists to be responsible and loyal. Capricorn is a great name for a good nanny goat who leads her herd by positive example.
8) Stevie Nicks
Fans of the animated show “South Park” will remember the episode where the boys send a dollar to poor children in Afghanistan, who respond by sending the boys from South Park a goat…who is then mistaken by everyone from American Soldiers to the media for famous Fleetwood Mac lead singer Stevie Nicks. If your goat sounds like she could sing, or if she makes a lot of noise, this might be a name to consider.
Turn the popular children’s tale on end by calling your goat Troll, a reference to the famous three billy goats who tricked the troll into letting them pass over his bridge without being eaten. This is a good name for a larger goat or one who has more drab markings.
10) Vincent Van Goat
Besides the obvious play on the name of the famous painter, this is also the name of a little-known comic book character. This name would be ideal for a got missing an ear, or for a LaMancha goat (this breed has very small ears that appear to be nonexistent). Also a great name for a very colorful goat with a unique pattern of colors in his coat.
