The top three ab exercises for getting a six pack will surprise you, because two of them aren’t even ab routines in the first place. I’m a certified personal trainer, and I’ve witnessed my clients develop a six pack from doing these three routines.
The top three ab exercises for getting that relished six pack are: 1) Sprinting, 2) Squats, and 3) Cable Crunches.
Yes, you read that right: The top ab exercise for that coveted six pack is sprinting. Don’t believe me? When’s the last time you saw an Olympic sprinter, or some sprinter on ESPN in a major track competition, who didn’t have ripped abs?
What’s going on here? Do sprinters do 1,000 crunches a day? No sir. Crunches and abdominal routines like leg raises and V sits don’t help a person sprint faster.
However, lots of sprint training develops the abs! You use your abs when running your absolute fastest. Even competitive middle distance runners have a six pack.
You need not be a competitive runner to acquire hot abs. You need not train as many hours as a competitive runner, either, to get that six pack. Only so much hard running will do the trick, and that “so much” can easily be incorporated into the average Joe’s or Jane’s fitness program.
Sprint workouts, in the form of high intensity interval training (HIIT), bring out the six pack because not only do you use these core muscles to run fast, but HIIT sprint workouts are extremely effective at burning body fat – and the thinner this layer of fat, the more visible are your abs.
Squatting also engages the six pack muscles, but strenuous or intense squats, like sprinting, also burn significant amounts of body fat. Crunches barely burn any fat, which is why 1,000 crunches or sit-ups a day are pointless.
The ability to do hundreds of crunches at once simply means you’ve built up the endurance to fold and unfold your body over and over and over.
Cable crunches directly hit the abdominals, and in combination with sprint workouts and squats, plus sensible eating habits, cable crunches will be a great assist at polishing off some fine-looking abs: that six pack you’ve dreamed about.
