The Truth: Pore size is also genetically determined. Bacteria and dead skin cells may cause them to look larger, though, so certain anti-aging beauty products can get rid of them and bring the pores back to their normal appearance.
Beauty Myth #2: Dry skin causes wrinkles
The Truth: Fact is, too much sun causes wrinkles. So does smoking, smiling, and frowning.
Beauty Myth #3: Tanning clears up acne
The Truth: It may cause blemishes to disappear for a while by drying out the skin. It actually causes more breakouts in the end by interfering with healthy skin cells. And it causes wrinkles.
Beauty Myth #4: You don’t need sunscreen on cloudy days
The Truth: You should be wearing sunscreen every day. Even when the sun isn’t shining, your skin is being exposed to the sun’s harmful rays.
Beauty Myth #5: Chocolate causes acne
The Truth: Chocolate does not cause acne. In fact, dark chocolate has many health benefits. No food has been proven to cause breakouts, so it is fine to eat in moderation.
Beauty Myth #6: Drinking lots of water clears up acne
The Truth: Drinking water is good because it helps you stay hydrated. It does not clear up acne, however. Acne is caused by bacteria and dirt that gets trapped under your pores. Regular cleansing will help clear up and prevent acne.
Beauty Myth #7: Organic and natural products are better for your skin
The Truth: This is not necessarily true. Each product should be individually researched and evaluated before using it to determine whether it is good for the skin or not.
Beauty Myth #8: Concealer should be lighter than your skin tone
The Truth: Choose a concealer that is yellow-based to conceal dark circles.
Beauty Myth #9: Split ends can be repaired with hair products
The Truth: Split ends can be temporarily sealed with hair products. To get rid of them altogether, they need to be cut off.
Beauty Myth #10: Shaving makes hair grow back thicker
The Truth: The actual amount of hair on your body is genetically determined and cannot be altered. Shaving, however, can make it appear “stubbier” which makes it look thicker once it grows back.
These are all old wives tales. Next time someone tells you that eating chocolate will make you break out, tell them that you know the truth. Then savor your chocolate bar!
