Tiger woods finally emerged today for a planned press conference after hiding from the media for 3 months. The press conference was extremely controlled with only a select number of guests allowed in the room with Tiger Woods. The rest of the media was allowed to sit in a nearby conference room and watch his press release from a large screen television. Tiger spoke for about 14 minutes and did not take questions after his speech but this is what he said.
ABOUT HIS WIFE
Tiger admitted his wrong doing when he stated, “I am deeply sorry for my irresponsible and selfish behavior I engaged in.” He said he and Elin would be working things out between them and that he wanted that process to remain private. He knows that nothing he can say will make their relationship better and that he would have to prove to her with his actions over time. He forcefully stated that Elin never hit him and that there was never an episode of domestic violence, despite speculation in the media.
ABOUT HIS WORK
He admits he has been a “personal disappointment” and a “considerable worry” for his business partners. He gave a genuine apology to his associates, staff, and the kids affected in his organization.
ABOUT HIS AFFAIRS
While Tiger never mentioned any of the women that he hurt or cheated with, he admitted that he thought he was above playing by the rules. Having been a prodigy since Age 2, tiger has worked his entire life and has acquired fame and fortune that led him to his next statement. “I thought i could get away with whatever i wanted to. I felt that I had worked hard my entire life and deserved to enjoy all the temptations around me. I felt that I was entitled.” But he admits, “I was wrong and I was foolish. I don’t get to play by different rules,” he said and admitted, “I brought this shame on myself”
Tiger admitted that for the past 3 months he was in rehab “receiving guidance” for the issues he is facing. He said, “I have a long way to go.” He mentioned several times in his speech that Elin would be working through these problems with him. Regarding the Press he said, “Please know that as far as I am concerned, every one of these questions and answers will remain between” him and Elin.
A MESSAGE TO THE PRESS
Before finishing his speech he wanted to clear the air on a few topics of concern. He denied ever using performance enhancing drugs and said the media have eluded several statements that are not true. Then he delivered a very strong message, like a warning, to the media about chasing his family for comments and photos. He addressed a specific incident regarding a time when his daughter was followed to school and a reporter named the school that his daughter attended in their public report. He wanted to make it clear that he would not tolerate the press following his children, his wife, or his mother. He begs, almost threatens, “Please leave my wife and kids alone despite what I have done.” He admits, “I have brought this on myself.” He delivered a strong message about the media chasing his family for comments and photos basically saying, enough is enough.
ABOUT HIS CORE VALUES
Tiger admits that he was raised a Buddhist and has lost sight of his core values. “Starting tomorrow I will leave for more treatment and therapy.” Tiger admits he has a long road ahead of him in recovery and included “I need to regain my balance and be centered” again.
While much of the press was disappointed that Tiger refused to take questions after the conference, they admitted he did a pretty good job of answering the questions that needed to be addressed and that he put himself in a position that would persuade the press to leave him and his family alone. But the truth is, Tiger Woods has a long road ahead. He did not say when he would return to golf, but said it could be this year, he just doesn’t know yet.
The one issue Tiger woods did not address that will leave him vulnerable is the relationships he had with his reported affairs. These women were the only ones left off the list. He did not apologize to them, and therefore I don’t think they will just go away. We will see.
