Tromping through the attic, John and Hyde was forced to cut their path through the packing boxes left on the floor. “Hyde, what is it I am supposed to do with this thinga majic?” John shook it back and forth. “Give me that, you have to be careful with the emf detector!” Hyde grabbed the detector from John’s hands. “You still haven’t answered me; what am I supposed to do with this . . . emf detector?” He asked. “It measures the electromagnetic field in the area where we are standing.” The same confused expression still lingered on John’s face. “If it starts going up on the chart, then you’ll know there are ghosts among us.” Hyde explained. “Allow me to demonstrate; we’ll start over here in this corner.” Hyde floated toward the nearest corner, the emf detector gently grasped in his hand. “Are you getting anything?” John joined him. “No, I’m getting no reading here . . . but maybe . . . if I do a sweep of the entire space, I may be able to pick up something.”
While Hyde was doing the emf’s, he stuffed a small tape recorder in John’s hands. “What’s this for?” He asked. “I’d like you to do some evp’s for me.” Hyde said. “Please don’t tell me you didn’t understand that, John; it’s not as if I lapsed into Swedish?” Hyde shrugged. “Just tell me what I’m supposed to be doing with this?” He asked. “All you have to do is to take a walk around the attic and ask some questions into the recorder, then play it back later.” He explained. “Whatever you say.” John replied. And while John was busy doing evp’s, Hyde continued his sweep of the attic, and as he was stopped at the silver chest near the dormer, the emf detector went insane. “John, come over here, the emf detector is going crazy!” John wasted no time in racing to Hyde’s side. “What’s wrong?” He asked. “As soon as I came over here to this silver chest, there was suddenly a spike. First it hit six then it just kept going up until it stopped at twenty.” Hyde exclaimed. “What do you think it means?” John asked. “It means what ever the spirit is that is lingering here is inside of this chest.” He said. “But before we open the chest, play back what you have already recorded and we’ll see what happens.” Hyde said. You could hear the recorder rewinding in John’s hand. “Stop!” Hyde ordered. At first the tape was silent until they came upon some in coherent murmuring. “You can skip ahead a little, maybe we’ll find something.”
“Are you sure, because I think I heard something?” John said. “What did it sound like?” Hyde asked. “Let’s play it back and I’ll tell you.” He strongly insisted. As soon as it ready, John pressed play and turned up the volume. This time it was especially clear what was being said. “Did you hear that, the voice said help me, granted it lower, that is exactly what the voice said.” John demanded. “What did you ask the ghost?” Hyde asked. “All I asked the spirits was if they need my help, and I guess I received my answer.” John replied. The two men stopped and looked at the silver chest. “I was standing near the chest when I asked this question; do you think someone may be in there?” He added. “If there is, then I think we have just crossed into Devlin’s territory; now we’re talking murder?” Hyde said.
