Watching Kathryn Bigelow accept the Academy Award for Best Director, was a proud moment not just for her, but for women everywhere. She is the first woman ever to win the best director award at this venue.
What really caught my attention is that her ex-husband, James Cameron, who was also nominated for the same award for his film, “Avatar”, appeared genuinely elated for his ex-wife when she won. Even after losing the award for himself, which was thought to be a shoe in for him, he was the first to stand up and applaud Bigelow.
This is rare in Hollywood for a divorced couple to be so appreciative of one another. Even though their marriage only spanned the two years of 1989 – 1991, it is a breath of fresh air to see the adult like attitude of these two professionals in Hollywood. The elation and standing ovation that Bigelow received from her ex, was just as big a tribute to the high esteem she evokes in Hollywood as the Oscar she held in her hand.
Alec Baldwin, who co-hosted the event, could take a lesson from this couple. It wasn’t too long ago that we heard in his words the overall disdain he has for his ex-wife, Kim Basinger. This was conveyed in a taped voice mail that he left for his young daughter, along with many other comments he threw out for all to hear. Their nasty divorce and child custody battle had them dragging each other through the mud for the world to see via the media.
The Kathryn Bigelow’s and James Cameron’s style divorce makes them look like the “grown-ups’ of Hollywood. Charlie Sheen’s idea of divorce has been displayed in the tabloids so many times, that it does not shock us anymore. He and Denise Richard’s messy divorce made Alec Baldwin’s antics look good. Charlie Sheen is at it again, this time with new wife, Brooke Mueller, who he threatened with a knife held up to her throat. He doesn’t play nice.
One of the best Hollywood divorces we have seen in modern history is that of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis. Demi and her younger husband, Ashton Kutcher, vacation with Bruce Willis. The Three adults and Demi’s and Bruce’s kids are one big family. They also spend holidays all together. Their mutual respect, is wonderful to see around the kids. It would be nice if their situation was more of “the norm”, for divorced Hollywood couples, but unfortunately, it is not.
Dwayne Johnson, “The Rock”, and his wife of 10 years, Dany, have a divorce that is still filled with love and respect, why? A little girl named, Simone. Simone is their daughter and she comes first. The divorced couple share custody of their child and it is important for them to remain friends.
The Hollywood director, John Derek, was married to four famous women. One he remained married to and the three others he remained friends with until his death in 1998. Linda Evans, Ursula Andress, and Path Behrs, were the ex’s and Bo Derek, was his fourth and last wife until his death. His compatibility and friendship with the ex-wives, was welcomed by his wife, Bo. This type of relationship is hard to come by. John Derek said his secret to remaining friends after divorce was to never talk bad about any of the ex-wives.
George Hamilton and Alana Stewart have a son in common and have remained friends for years. It wasn’t so friendly when they were first divorced, but they came around. Their bond grew stronger as they stood by their son as he struggled with heroin addiction.
Burt Reynolds and Loni Anderson once left a child support hearing holding hands. The divorced couple have remained close and on very good terms. Even though divorced, the two hare a mutual admiration for one another.
Diane Lad and Bruce Dern went the way of enemies for most of their divorce and it wasn’t until they were in a movie together along with their daughter, Laura Dern, that they got back on track to acting like adults to one another. They are now very friendly, which makes it much easier and certainly more delightful for their daughter, Laura.
It is nice to see adults behaving as adults in Hollywood divorces. Unfortunately, there are more Roseanne Barr’s, Brittany Spears, Heather Mills, and the list goes on. If we can learn anything from the first woman to ever receive a “Best Director” Academy Award, is how she and her ex, James Cameron, handle themselves around divorce.
