A Taylor Swift Grammy controversy seems to be the buzz of the music world these days. Was the Taylor Swift Grammy performance that off key or is she being unfairly criticized?
Let’s start this analysis with the obvious. Many people who produce records fail to produce a live version even in proximity to what is sold and marketed. Taylor Swift wouldn’t be the first person to take the stage and have an off night. The Grammy Performance from Taylor Swift wasn’t exactly here best work to date during a live performance. There is probably a lot of jealousy surrounding a young female country music star who seems to be receiving award after award during an incredibly insane year.

Was it enough to cause a Taylor Swift Grammy controversy? Taylor performs with Stevie Nicks and it’s apparent she is off. There were various reports on the net that her earpiece had too much noise or was possibly too loud in her ear. There are many variables that could spell trouble with a “live” performance. The bottom line is that it’s “live” and Taylor Swift hasn’t been dubbed as the “best vocalist” by anyone that I know of. Taylor Swift just sells records. She breaks records by selling so many records. She produces, writes and plays her own stuff. Taylor Swift obviously has talent. Is she the best singer in the music world? Probably not. Does she claim to be? Apparently other people believe she has talent if she constantly keeps winning awards. Let’s not forget that Taylor Swift is probably so popular because she represents “every young girl”. She isn’t marketed as somebody that isn’t accessible like some of the music celebs that act like a pre-madonna. She is a down home girl who many young women can relate to. Her music plays to that fact very well.
Nobody is comparing Taylor Swift to Beyonce, Celine Dion or even Martina McBride. Taylor Swift is more of a package deal with her youth, entertaining mindset and fun songs. Will she become a better singer with age? Perhaps she will. The biggest fact in this discussion is that Taylor Swift will continue to sell records as long as they are well produced and fun to listen to on the radio. She’ll do it even if she has another off night performance at the 2011 Grammy Awards.
There are other genres that don’t play as well live. Some “rap” songs don’t come across in live performances nearly as well as they are packaged and produced on an album. People have to realize that sometimes an artist will have a hard time reproducing every single song on a nightly basis. Taylor Swift could have been exhausted from touring, singing new songs on albums or could even have a cold. It’s “live” music and anything can happen.
Most artists have at least one of those nights during a Music Award show where they falter. They’re only human. I think the Taylor Swift Grammy controversy is well overblown. I won’t argue with anyone who claims she is not the best singer in the world. I will argue that sometimes an artist who endures live performances many nights a year deserves to have a “bad night”. Taylor Swift will be the one laughing at a so-called Grammy controversy. She’ll be laughing all the way to the bank–even if her laugh is off-key.
