First off, I would like to define some key terms. According to the 2009 fund for peace, a failing nation has characteristics such as
-loss of physical control of its own territory
-inability to make collective decisions
-inability to provide reasonable public services
A stable nation; however, is not the exact opposite of a failed nation but quite close, therefore a stable nation must have the following:
-having control of its territory
-a strong government that can make collective decisions
-provides reasonable public services
Firstly, I would like to point out that Stable Nations pose an economic threat to the United States.
Economically speaking, China is a power house. Some people suspect that China will overtake the US as the world’s largest trade economy in a few years; China’s rise in this respect means America’s decline. Additionally, another concern are the large and growing US trade deficits with China. People feel that China uses unfair trade practices to flood U.S. markets with low-cost goods and to restrict U.S. exports, and that such practices threaten American jobs, wages, and living standards. In that sense, China is a threat to the U.S. economy.
Secondly, I will point out that Stable Nations have an organized military and strategy
One reason Stable nations are a greater threat than failed nations is that stable nations have greater means and less internal conflict. Stable Nations have greater means, greater money, greater weapons to utilize in order to back up any threat to the United States. They have the capability to make the United States suffer much more than do failed nations. Since we must judge a threat by its ends, we must see that this capability is ultimately a deciding factor.
For an example of this, take a look at the amount of nuclear weapons all nations have. The only failed nations with nuclear missiles are Pakistan and possibly North Korea. This leaves less than one hundred nuclear weapons in the world in the possession of failed nations. Compare this with the 13865 know nuclear weapons held by stable nations (noninclusive of the United States) and we see most definitely that the greater negative ends would be able to be put in place by Stable Nations. When you consider this, we must see that Stable nations pose a major military threat compared to failed nations.
Now, compare the viability of attack by a failed nation versus that of a stable nation. In order to carry out a unified attack against the United States, surely we must see that there mustn’t be massive internal conflict. If we look at the indicators of failed nations, we see that these indicators basically add up to internal conflict. It is simply not viable to form an offensive front when there exists this conflict.
Contrast that to stable nations, and we see that stable nations have less of the indicators than that of failed nations, and those they do have they possess in much smaller magnitude. Based on this we see that stable nations are more capable of forming a greater threat against the United States.
Lastly, I would like to mention that Stable nations pose a major environmental threat to the United States.
China’s environmental degradation threatens the United States. According to a Green Peace study, “China is now by far the world’s biggest driver of rainforests destruction. Nearly five out of ten tropical hardwood logs shipped from the world’s threatened rainforests are now heading for China – more than to any other destination” According to the same study “China is the world’s leading consumer of four out of the five basic food, energy and industrial commodities – grain, meat, coal and steel.” That same study also states that “If China’s Greenhouse gas emissions continue to remain uncontrolled, the growth of China’s carbon dioxide emissions over the next 20 years will dwarf any cuts in CO2 that the rest of the world can make.” According to a report by Volker Mrasek, “China’s CO2 emissions will almost double in the next two decades compared with 2002 levels.”
Russia is an environmental threat to the United States as well. According the the National Intelligence Council, “Over 200 cities exceed Russian pollution limits. The number of vehicles on the road has increased rapidly, and their emissions will offset reductions in industrial air pollution owing to reduced economic activity and greater reliance on natural gas.” According the the same Council, “Hazardous waste disposal problems are extensive and growing. Russian officials estimate that about 200 metric tons of the most highly toxic and hazardous wasts are dumped illegally each year in locations that lack effective environmental or public health protections or oversight.” Environmental problems such as air pollution, hazardous waste disposal, and deforestation cause by the stable nations will cause a huge environmental threat to the United States.
Obviously, stable nations pose a major threat, if not the biggest threat of all to the United States. By understanding that Stable Nations pose not only a military, but environmental, and economic threat. We can make rational decision to find ways to defend ourselves against the greater threat.
