It is already time to be thinking about spring break. Many high school seniors will be heading to the beaches for the trip of their lifetime. So many mothers will be worrying and fretting, packing as many first aid products and toiletries as the airlines allow. I get a giggle remembering how worried I was when my son went on his senior trip to Mexico. I was one of the mothers that packed and worried.
My son still talks about his spring break trip often. He always says it was the best week of his life. I have seen enough pictures of him dancing on bars and table tops to fully understand that it was truly just that, the time of his life. One of the things that stands out in all of the pictures of his trip is the hats that one mother made for each kid on the trip. My son and his friends wear those hats still and they were such a neat idea that they inspired me to write this article.
If you have a son or daughter going on a spring break trip this year, consider making them one of these homemade souvenirs. These craft projects are simple and inexpensive. You might want to consider making one for everyone going on the trip. The mother that made the hats for the Mexico trip will be remembered forever for her efforts. Here are a few of my favorite craft ideas for spring break.
Souvenir Ball Caps :
This is the perfect gift for a group going on a spring break trip. Purchase adjustable sized baseball caps for each person going on the trip. It is best to choose just one color so that the group stands out in the airports and hotels. Simply personalize each cap with the destination and date of the trip. You can purchase permanent markers at any craft or department store and either free hand or stencil the caps. You might want to consider Tulip Fashion Graffiti Stencils for this project. Click here to read more about them. It is also very easy to decorate baseball caps with pins or stickers. Choose anything you like to decorate but try to keep the hats as uniform as possible. These caps will be a hit and a priceless souvenir.
Spring Break T-Shirts :
This is another very inexpensive craft idea that could be purchased for an entire group going on spring break. Purchase packages of t-shirts at any department store. Use fabric paint to personalize each shirt with the date and destination of the trip. I would suggest trying Folk Art Fabric Paint. It is easy to use and perfect for this project. You can read more about this product by clicking here or by visiting any Michaels craft store. You could also add an iron on image to each shirt. Consider Easyimage Iron-On Light Fabric Transfer. These iron-ons are very easy to work with and you can find out more about them by clicking here. It is best to purchase light colored shirts and use darker color paint. It is also wise to use the same color for each shirt so that the group stands out.
Spring Break Sandals :
This is my favorite craft idea for spring break. I found some very inexpensive sandals at Old Navy. By just purchasing some permanent markers, you can turn a pair of flip flop sandals into a very unique souvenir. The hardest part of this project will be finding out what sizes you will need. I would suggest attending any meetings for planning the trip or just making a phone call to each parent. Old Navy carries a large variety of colors and the prices are extremely reasonable. Choose bright colors and with dark markers add the date of the trip to one strap and the destination of the trip to the other. You will be met with huge smiles when you show up with a bag full of these sandals for those going on the trip. Click here to view all the colors that are available this season. You might want to consider Prismacolor Premier Fine Line Markers for this project. The fine line markers are perfect for the small straps on sandals. You can read more about these markers by clicking here.
Colorful Cooler Cups :
You may want to mention to your high school senior that these cooler cups can be used for pop even if that is just wishful thinking. With that said, you can not beat this idea for a spring break craft project. Purchase some very inexpensive cooler cups at any store that sells everything for a dollar. Use a thick permanent marker to add the date and destination to each cup. You can have a lot of fun decorating these cooler cups with stickers that can also be purchased at any store that sells everything for a dollar. Try to find stickers that have a tropical theme or anything fun. You can also personalize these cups with the name of each student going on the trip. These souvenir cups will be fun and they will surely be put to good use.
With very little effort, you can create each of these craft projects for an investment of ten dollars or less per person. That is a very small price to pay to create something that will be treasured for years to come. You will find that even years after the trip, those that still have their hat or shirt will wear them very proudly.
The best part of making a homemade souvenir is that by putting your crafting skills to work, you are making a happy occasion even happier. You will love looking at all the pictures from the trip and seeing the kids wearing something you made for them. We can’t always be by their sides but, we can send a little love from home with them wherever they go. Try not to fret too much over your child growing up and going away. Use your time wisely and make yourself a part of it all by creating something that will last. There is nothing nicer than being a part of the best time of their lives.
