I saw a great ad on TV through AT&T that I could get a great package deal if I signed up through them. I would get Direct TV for my cable and AT&T would service my home phone line and my internet. I had this same package with my former local cable company as well. The AT&T package deal was 10 bucks cheaper and it gave us more channels. So I decided to change.
After a week of AT&T having problems with my internet and not being able to keep me connected, I dropped them. We liked the Direct TV though so we decided we would keep that part. I went back to my former cable company for our home phone line and internet and stayed on with Direct TV for our TV.
Once I decided to do this I realized they had raised their prices which ended up being a lot more then I could afford. So I called in January to cancel my service and just went back to my local cable company. Direct TV was suppose to cancel my service and send me shipping boxes so I could return their equipment. They never sent the boxes to me. At the end of January I decided to call them and ask once again where my boxes were and what exactly needed to be sent back. I knew I bought something but I wasnt sure what it was that I had purchased. They told me what was mine and what was theirs and once again told me they would send me the boxes along with a final bill.
Two months went by and I hadn’t herd anything from them. On April 1st I logged into my bank account to realize I was in negative. I didn’t know how this could be possible as I knew we finally had some extra money only because my husband had worked a lot of overtime during his last paycheck. I realize direct TV has billed me for $844.00. To say I was shocked would be putting it mild.
I called direct TV as soon as I seen this charge and asked them what was going on and who authorized this charge. They told me that $310 was for not returning the equipment. I was then told that $350 was for breaking my contract and another $144 for billing in January, February and March. The breaking contract fee I knew about but I was told I would be billed for this. I never authorized them to charge my debit card for any of this. I didn’t know I would be charged for not returning the equipment since I was still waiting on them to send me the shipping boxes and packaging forms. The $144 charge for the cable for them months is just crazy. How can you charge me for cable when I wasn’t using it. I got no where with my phone call. My husband then called back and tried to get it figured out only to find out they are big time scammers.
They told my husband on the phone they have me on their notes as calling in at the beginning of January to tell them I was thinking about canceling my service. Then they have in their notes that I called in a second time asking which equipment was mine and what was theirs. They said there was nothing we could do about it. So my husband hung up and called once again. He went though the same thing again and asked to speak to a manager. He told the manager what was going on and they said they could not authorize any type of refund. He said if we returned the equipment (which was already on its way back) we would get a refund of $310. But the $144 dollars would not be refunded. If we wanted to dispute the charge we would have to write a letter. I also told him I think they should have to pay my bank fees for over drafting my account.
This place is a pure scam to say the least. How can someone charge a debit card without me giving authorization? I thought that was the whole point in my name being on the card. My band says since we have used that debit card to pay our bill then they are aloud to charge it when they want since there is no way to decipher if we gave permission or if we did not. I was not signed up on any auto payments or anything of this nature. I hope after reading this article you will think twice before signing up on any contracts especially with direct TV.
