My husband is a gadget person! The last time we were at Bed Bath & Beyond, he ended up with numerous items in our cart that I didn’t think we needed. One that I was skeptical about (but gave in to) was a small package containing a natural odor absorbing crystal called Refrigerator Fresh, made by TCCD International.
Refrigerator Fresh reminds me of a small snow globe. It has a 1/2′ high, 2″ diameter cobalt blue plastic base. A clear 2″ high dome sits on top, that has 20 oval vent holes, 10 in the front and 10 in the back.
Inside the plastic dome is a white and opal looking colored mound of crystals. They look like rock candy to me.
The base has a white label that allows you to write down the date that you first started using it, and says to replace it in 6 months. It also says to “rinse every 8 weeks under faucet to refresh crystal”.

I was skeptical when my husband showed me this product, because when I was trying to eliminate aluminum in my deodorants several years ago, I purchased a crystal deodorant that was worthless. I mainly bought it to appease him.
There is no odor associated with this product, and it contains natural mineral salts. I’ve given this odor absorbing crystal a fair chance, and have tried it in a bathroom, a musty closet, a small laundry room and our refrigerator.
Just as I suspected, I saw absolutely no improvement in these areas. The rooms didn’t even smell very strongly, so if it was going to work it should have worked in one of my rooms! I’d hate to think how this would perform (or not) in a smelly area like around a cat litter box!
I like the concept of this product, it is small and compact and will fit in a small enclosed area. It’s non-toxic, and the clear dome cover does not come off, so there is no worry about kids (or pets) getting into it.
I have noticed that the top of the crystal has a small hole, which seems to be working it’s way down through the center of the mass, and I didn’t notice this when I first started using it. So clearly something is happening to the crystal, but it’s just not very efficient in removing odors as claimed. At least not in my house.
Rinsing the crystal, as described, doesn’t harm it at all, and it doesn’t “melt” any of the crystals, they just get wet.
All in all, I am very disappointed in this product, and feel like it was a total waste of $4.99. I am glad that Bed Bath & Beyond has a generous return policy, and I was able to get a full refund.
Refrigerator Fresh is a product of Thailand.
