Everyone who listens to the radio today knows one thing: radio today sucks. Its not because there is no good music out there though. Its because corporate music wants to mold your tastes to their liking. So I have decided to “take the power back” and find awesome new music for the people. Mostly because I am narcissistic enough to think I have good taste in music and should tell everyone about it. Well, actually its because I enjoy music and like to share my joys with others. See… I am not all that bad.
Album: Almost Everything I Wish I’d Said the Last Time I Saw You… (2010)
It is not very often you find a band that seems to tug on every emotion you can have. Myself being a big cry baby, became totally drawn into this album by the sincere lyrics and beautiful arrangements. Wakey!Wakey! is fronted by One Tree Hill actor Mike Grubbs who sings like a glorious hippie angel. For the record I have never seen an episode of One Tree Hill and I never plan to. But that being said, I wish I knew about Mike’s music sooner. He is an amazing artist. Wakey!Wakey! had been around before One Tree Hill, but Mike Grubbs impressed the producers of One Tree Hill so much that they tapped him for a recurring role on the show as a bartender. This gave Wakey!Wakey! a big boost in exposure and even gave them a chance to have one of their songs be played during the finale of One Tree Hill.
Now to capatilize on their success, Wakay!Wakey! have released a full LP. Mike says in an interview with Spinner: “With the new album, people can expect a whole new sound from W!W!. We’ll still have dark haunting tracks … but we’re also giving you some more danceable and open sounding songs”. During the interview he also mentions “There are songs where the musical delivery will be bright, but the underlying topic matter is actually darker, like ‘Twenty Two.'” I recommend Wakey!Wakey! to anyone who wants something meaningful and easy to listen to while keeping substance. Or you could listen to “Kesha” sing about getting drunk and being a whore. Your choice…
1. Almost Everything
The opening track prepares you for whats to come by giving you a full ensemble right from the start showing off Mike Grubbs genius.
6. 1876 – The Brooklyn Theatre Fire
A haunting track that shows off the darker side of Wakey!Wakey!. A great example of how Mike composes deep messages into his great lyrics.
11. Take It Like A Man
Sounding like the beginning to a Italian opera, Take it Like A Man is probably one the most unique songs I have ever heard.
Artist:Sky Eats Airplane
Album: Sky Eats Airplane (2008)
In stark contrast from the previous band, Sky Eats Airplane is an experimental indie electronica metal band. To be perfectly honest… I seriously love this band. Sky Eats Airplane is a self promoted wonder of underground music that has fueled the electronicore revolution. They stay away from the industrial metal sound which is a welcome change. Personally I am getting a little tired of the same techno beat layered with guitar over, and over, and over again. Leave that to Trent Reznor please.
Created in 2005 by Lee Duck and Brack Cantrell, the duo released several demo songs. Sky Eats Airplane became a huge online success and became well known in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. After this, Brack and Lee created a self-produced album titled Everything Perfect On the Wrong Day in only 3 months. The release was again a success online and locally. Sadly, in the Fall of 2006 Brack left the band due to wanting to pursue softer, acoustic music. This prompted Lee to go on a nationwide search for a perfect singer for the band. While doing so, Lee made an effort to fill out the bands sound by recruting Zack Ordway, Kenny Schick, and John Erickson from fellow local band “In Theory”. During lengthy tryouts through MySpace, they found Jerry Roush from Hampton, VA to be their new vocalist. With that, Sky Eats Airplane evolved into the full 5-piece band that we love today.
Sky Eats Airplane accomplished their underground success without any help from mainstream promotion. This makes them heroes in my book. Sky Eats Airplane gained their success entirely through word of mouth and via their MySpace page. Their music is kept genuine and unique by their innovative style and open minded approach. Unlike industrial metal that is basically a rave with guitar, Sky Eats Airplane uses synth to create atmosphere while filling out the rest of their sound with traditional instruments. Not to many bands can pull it off as well as these guys do. Thats partially why they are such an independent success.
Standout Tracks: 3.Transparent
A great song to get an idea of what Sky Eats Airplane is all about. Seamlessly blending electronic ambiance and metal power.
Their first single off of the album. Initially it screams power at you with mathcore time signatures but then lightens up during the chorus, showing off the soft vocals of Jerry Roush.
6. In Retrospect
One of their more melodic and softer songs. This song is a favorite because of the heartfelt lyrics and how the music amplifies the emotion from Jerry Roush’s singing.
