Every winter parts of the United States have storms that are severe enough to knock out power and freeze the water to homes and even whole communities. That is why preparing your home for a winter storm is so important. Even where I live in Arizona we have to worry about power outages from rain, wind and the occasional snow storm, in Southwestern , Arizona it is a little easier to make it through a winters night without power, however, it still gets very cold. In this article I will give you some pointers to prepare your home for a winter storm, to aid you in getting through it safer and happier.
One of the primary concerns when you are considering preparing your home for a winter storm is electrical outage. If you live in a warmer climate this is not as big as a concern as if you live in a colder climate, for the purpose of this article, I will approach this from the perspective that you live in a cold climate area. Preparing your home for electrical outages takes more thought than what you might think, for example, you need to ask yourself some questions, before you can begin preparing your home for a winter storm. Do you have an electric oven? If so you may want to consider purchasing a quality camp stove, I am partial to Coleman products. What type of home heating do you have? It is an unfortunate fact that during a cold weather storm, people freeze to death because they can not get warm in their homes and they are unable to leave. The best choice is a wood stove, if you do not have a wood stove you can purchase propane camp heaters that when moved into a smaller room will help to keep you warm. It is important to remember though that if you use some type of propane heater or a similar devise that you crack a window, so that you do not use all the oxygen in the room. When preparing your home for a winter storm it is also important to look at your lighting. It is a good idea to have quality flashlights and extra batteries and have them in areas around your home where you can find them. Coleman battery powered lanterns are also a good thing to have for emergencies of this type.
When preparing your home for a winter storm it is a good idea to look at your water supply. During a winter storm it is common for water pipes to freeze, even if you have your pipes wrapped. Having water stored is always a good thing to do. In the case of a winter storm you may want to fill your bath tubs just to have the extra water to stay hydrated and for cooking or cleaning.
When you are preparing your home for a winter storm you also need to look at your food supply. If you have read my past articles, you know that I advocate keeping a supply of food on hand, however, in the case of a winter storm it is a good idea to have plenty of canned food on hand that you can eat even with-out heating if necessary. A good place to store food of this type is a cabinet that is specifically set aside for this purpose.
In closing it is a good idea to remember the kids when preparing your home for a winter storm. Kids tend to get board easily so it is a good idea to have plenty of board games in your home to stave off the boredom. Also do not forget the animals if you have them they will need food and water also.
