A Pants on the Ground Jimmy Fallon parody was unique for late night last night. Pants on the Ground Jimmy Fallon bits are about American Idol, after all. In today’s new world, late night hosts are only supposed to bash Jay Leno and NBC, or praise Conan O’Brien. However, Fallon’s standing is safe at NBC – as only his lead in will change. As such, the Pants on the Ground Jimmy Fallon routine – as Neil Young no less, was a welcome relief from the feuding.
While everyone was covering the Leno/Conan/NBC triangle, American Idol got started amidst all the chaos. By far, their biggest highlight of opening week was the ‘Pants on the Ground’ song, by 62-year-old ‘General’ Larry Platt. The video is the first viral hit of Idol Season 9 and has been remixed and parodied extensively in the last two days.
The other late night hosts are busy with Leno and O’Brien, and not so much Idol. So it was up to Jimmy Fallon to spoof Pants on the Ground, though not as himself. Fallon used to be an impressionist on SNL before moving to Weekend Update, and he brought that skill back as Neil Young, of all performers.
The Pants on the Ground song was wild and crazy as performed by Larry Platt. Having it done by Neil Young – or by Fallon’s version of him – is something else altogether. So for the first time in many nights, a late night host did something big that has nothing to do with the Tonight Show.
When the NBC civil war broke out, it appeared that Jimmy Fallon would be another victim. NBC’s original plan was to move Fallon’s Late Night to 1:05, before both Leno and O’Brien. In his now famous statement, O’Brien even slammed NBC for harming Fallon, who is also in the first months of his new gig.
Yet unlike O’Brien, Fallon will get to stay on his new show for a while longer. Since it seems that they’ll just put Leno back at 11:35, and lose Conan altogether, Fallon should stay safe at 12:35.
As such, he has become the forgotten man in late night – to say nothing of Last Call’s Carson Daly. Much like American Idol has been nearly forgotten this week, aside from the Pants on the Ground routine and Simon Cowell’s resignation.
Yet the Fallon Pants on the Ground parody has put them back on the map, to balance out the Leno/Conan madness for at least a night. However, Larry Platt and his song are guaranteed some lasting ’15 minutes of fame’ recognition from the Idol crowd.
Once the NBC battles are resolved, then Jimmy Fallon may go back to late night obscurity – no matter where his pants are. Since the unpopular Leno may be his lead in soon, it could be a hard road ahead.
