On March 6, 2010, the Northwest Bulldogs Pop Warner Football and Cheer Organization held its annual awards banquet at New Shiloh Baptist Church in Baltimore to celebrate the 2009 season.
With over 200 athletes participating in the 2009 season, Board Chairman Tyrone Johnson, provided the season’s highlights:
– This was the 11th year of providing programs.
– The program serves to “Build Better Minds, Better Character, Better Athletes.”
– All competitive tackle teams (ages 8 and over) earned their way to the Maryland Football and Cheer Association (MFCA) Championship.
– The 7-9 and 11-14 tackle teams were Pop Warner Maryland State Postseason Tournament Champions.
– The 8-10 Cheer Squad earned 2nd place at the MFCA state championship and advanced to the Pop Warner Eastern Regional Cheer Qualifier in Trenton, New Jersey.
The Bulldogs also recognized those players who have been with the organization for their entire Pop Warner career. These players were Duane Dowell, Jhaquan Perkins, Sherman Brown, and Naghee Fitzgerald (Fitzgerald started with the Bulldogs on the 8-10 tackle team).
Many thanks were given to parents, coaches, and volunteers who gave of their time to make the season a success. The Bulldogs also paid tribute to those in the Bulldog family who passed away this year: Eleanor Gross, Marcus Williams, and Coach George Jackson.
Banquet attendees also had the pleasure of hearing from two motivational speakers: Coach Donald Davis, head football coach at Calvert Hall College, and Mike Anderson, Commissioner of the Grass Roots Youth Football League. Coach Davis reminded the players that their actions speak louder than words, so they need to be sure to build up their character. Mr. Anderson, who has been diagnosed with leukemia, advised the kids to dream big, shoot for the moon, work hard, play hard, stay focused, and go to college. Do all of this to achieve your goals and dreams.
The following individual awards were given to adult volunteers, coaches, and parents who performed outstanding service during the 2009 season:
– Volunteer of the Year
– Volunteer Support
– Volunteer of the Year
– Assistant Football Coach of the Year
– Cheer Coach of the Year
– Football Coach of the Year
In addition to these individual awards, all of the cheer and football teams gave out awards for participation, post season championships, and individual athlete awards for outstanding players and cheerleaders.
