The NFL power rankings in week 17 are the next-to-last of the year. If form held, the NFL power rankings for week 17 would be pretty easy to make, as they have been most of the year. Almost all season, the top teams have been the same, leaving little debate on who the elite were. But at the last minute, almost no one who consistently won from September to November is winning now. Therefore, the NFL power rankings in week 17 are providing a last minute headache.
Things are so bad in the top 5, the top team in the power rankings is coming off a loss. Since the Indianapolis Colts were 14-0, one loss may not have dropped them off No. 1 anyway. But even though the Colts are still on top, no one is happy with them for giving up against the Jets. At this point, nothing short of a Super Bowl will make up for it.
For all the outrage at the Colts, they can’t be dropped down the NFL power rankings – since no one else seems to want the top spot. The Saints certainly can’t take it, after losing to the 2-12 Bucs. The Vikings certainly didn’t want it in the first half and overtime against the Bears last night. The Eagles are moving up, but even they almost blew a big lead to reeling Denver.
The only reason the San Diego Chargers aren’t No. 1, is because it looks silly to rank a 12-3 team ahead of a 14-1 one. But the Chargers are clearly the best team in football at this very moment.
Usually, the big 3 or 4 ruled the NFL power rankings, while everyone else around them kept changing places. But for week 17, the teams below the top 5 stayed stable, as all the 9-5 teams behind them took care of business.
While the top 5 moved around, and the 6-10 teams stayed the same, it got pretty hard to rank the 8-7 teams behind them. The Steelers are probably back in the top 12, although they are long shots to make the playoffs. The Jets got a gift from the Colts, and could get another one from the Bengals, so pundits may be reluctant to move them up. The Ravens, Giants and Broncos all tanked, while the Texans and Falcons got to 8-7 too little, too late.
The NFL power rankings in week 17 are tricky – but at least there’s only one more poll to go. Here’s how the penultimate list looks so far.
1. Indianapolis Colts: 14-1
2. San Diego Chargers: 12-3
3. New Orleans Saints: 13-2
4. Philadelphia Eagles: 11-4
5. Minnesota Vikings: 11-4
6. Green Bay Packers: 10-5
7. Cincinnati Bengals: 10-5
8. Dallas Cowboys: 10-5
9. New England Patriots: 10-5
10. Arizona Cardinals: 10-5
11. Pittsburgh Steelers: 8-7
12. New York Jets: 8-7
