From time to time we will hear celebrities spouting off about the latest natural health trends. Everyone in the country jumps on the bandwagon and soon this magic pill or drink is everywhere we look. Most of these natural health trends are very good for you. They are not, however, the only thing you should be doing for your health. A healthy lifestyle that includes these things is what we should be aiming for. Americans are ‘quick fix’ fixated. Unfortunately, they’re not as quick to fix the bad habits that got them into the shape they’re in. So we continually stumble from one magic pill to another, in the hopes we can cure what ails us without a large amount of effort. Meanwhile good nutrition and a healthy amount of exercise fall by the wayside. So what’s the truth about all these natural health trends?
Green tea is wonderful for you. It’s full of powerful antioxidants. As a part of a healthy diet, green tea can help you lose weight as well. Know what’s better? White tea is much higher in antioxidants than green tea. Why don’t we know this? White tea is not a natural health trend. That is, it’s not highly publicized, so not many people know about it. The bottom line? Green tea is great for you, white tea is better. Neither is a magic pill. In order to achieve a healthy body, we must eat a balanced diet, rich in nutrients and we must get exercise.
Here’s another of the natural health trends endorsed by celebrities? It’s very expensive and claims to cure everything from flab to cancer. Is it true? Well, yes and no. Acai berries are loaded with antioxidants. Yes, antioxidants are good for you. Therefore, yes, acai berries are good for you. Are they better for you than any other fruit high in antioxidants? No, not really. Eat a diet rich in fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables. Change up your colors and stick to the bright ones. You’ll have all the antioxidants you need.
Sorry, Mom. Yes we absolutely need vitamin D. It’s vital for the immune system and everything else. Supplements? Maybe not so much. Yes, I know Dr. Oz is a real doctor. I know he has good intentions and he is right, sort of. What is so bad about taking Vitamin D supplements? Well, what these natural health trends advocates don’t tell you about Vitamin D is, the body uses the vitamin D from sunlight in a far superior way. In fact, the skin produces 10000 IU of vitamin D in response to the sun in just 20 to 30 minutes! So get outside for at least a half hour a day for some good old fashioned sunshine. No sunscreen during this time, it blocks vitamin D absorption.
Colon Cleansing / Detox
Is the average American colon really full of undigested material? Sometimes, but not always. Do we need colon cleansing? Once again, yes and no. What we really need is a healthy diet full of fiber to keep the colon free of bad bacteria. People who eat plenty of fiber, whole grains, fruits and veggies have colons that are clean as a whistle. Want a true detox diet? Eat healthy! It keeps the colon clean without natural health trend flushes and crazy diets. Your magic pill is eating right.
What about eating yogurt? Are those new yogurts really a good idea? What’s the best one? Once again, this natural health trend gets a yes and no answer. The probiotics in yogurt are great for digestive health. The sugar in some major brands is counterproductive. Sugar is a yeast feeding food. Excess yeast in the system causes yeast infections and other yeast overgrowth issues. What’s the your best bet in this case? Stick to all natural, unsweetened yogurt. If you want a little sweeter taste, blend it up with some berries or other fruit. The added fiber is great for you and will help the yogurt do it’s job.
Once again, we have a fruit juice that’s high in antioxidants. This natural health trend is delicious and good for you. It is higher in antioxidants than most fruits and vegetables. That’s awesome news. It’s also highly expensive. The other issue is that pomegranate juice is quite sour. That means sugar is added to make it drinkable. Sometimes there is even our arch enemy, high fructose corn syrup in pomegranate juice. The verdict? This fruit juice demands a label check. Be sure it’s sweetened with other fruit juices instead of sugar. Wait a minute! What does this tell you? There’s no magic pill. Just eat lots of antioxidant rich fruits and veggies for the very same benefit.
