National Treasure 3 is starting to create rumors about where the plot will be heading. National Treasure 3 is in development at this point, which means that they are probably still working on the script, and that not all of the main actors/actresses have been signed on to the picture yet. According to IMDBPro, Nicolas Cage and Jon Voight are already signed on to the picture, returning as the father-son treasure hunting team. They were both in the first two films of the series, and were pretty good in those roles. The film will also be coming from Jerry Bruckheimer Films, which guarantees that they will have a nice budget to work with. He will also serve as a major producer on the film.
When the original National Treasure came out back in 2004, it made $173 million domestically, and another $174.5 million in other countries to total $347.5 million in box office receipts. That of course led to the quick green-light for a sequel, which was called National Treasure: Book of Secrets, which on its own made $219.9 million domestically and $237 outside of the U.S. to total just over $457.3 million. That means that the first two films made over $800 million just in box office receipts, and though the films won’t win any awards for writing, they have the slick presentation and flow that makes most audiences quite happy with what they are seeing on the screen.
The immense success of the first two films spells out why they are working on a third one, but director Jon Turteltaub has stated that he wants to take it slow to get a good idea in the script. There are plenty of mysteries and treasures that the Gates family and friends can search for next, with one of the strong rumors involving Atlantis.
There is also the sub-plot of the second film, where Page 47 of the President’s book was discussed, but was never actually revealed to the audience. Either idea could create a nice story for the characters. There is also no news yet if Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, Helen Mirren, or Harvey Keitel will return. To keep continuity and interest though, they should try as hard as they can to keep the whole cast together.
The release date for a third National Treasure film is scheduled for 2011, but they haven’t assigned an exact date to it yet. With no filming having been done for the film yet, it would be safe to expect this to be a fall picture, maybe getting released around October or November of 2011. It will be interesting for fans to see the characters back in action again, and they left so much open from the last film that there is room for a lot of action as well as improvement on the story writing end of things.
