I’d have to say that my favorite sports movie would be “The Blind Side,” which was released in November of 2009, according to IMDB. www.imdb.com
This movie is about a large but young African American boy named Michael Oher. He was homeless because he kept running away from the foster homes that he was placed in. He eventually ends up becoming enrolled in a private Christian school by one of his foster parents who appeals to the football coach. The football coach looks at Michael and is amazed at how big he is and that he could play football for him.
Michael is very quiet and is eventually discovered by Leigh Ann Tuohy, who with her family takes him in, and eventually adopts him. He ends up going to school and making friends with S.J. and Collins, the Tuohy’s son and daughter.
He learns how to play football with the help of S.J. and Sean and is inspired by Leigh Ann. She inspires him by telling him that the quarterback and the other players on his team are like him family, and he has to protect his family.
It doesn’t take that long for him to become really good at football and he begins to catch the eye of college football scouts. When they begin seeing how good he is the college football coaches begin to take notice and start the recruiting battle. Most of the coaches from the major football programs on the east coast try to recruit him.
Seeing that Michael does have a future Leigh Ann and Sean Tuohy decide to hire Michael a tutor to help him with his school work so he can graduate high school. Soon after the coaches start making their visits and pitching their football programs and schools. As graduates of Ole Miss, Leigh Ann and Sean naturally want Michael to go there. So does Miss Sue, who is Michael’s tutor and alumni of Ole Miss.
Michael decides to attend Ole Miss where he plays football and is eventually drafted into the NFL as the 1st round draft pick of the Baltimore Ravens.
I really enjoyed this movie because it is a great and true story about a family reaching out and helping someone. They end up helping Michael in finding himself and a bright future. Nobody would ever think that a homeless kid would ever end up graduating high school, going to college, and getting drafted into the NFL. It is just an incredible story and was a great movie, filled with some drama, and lots of humor.
It was really touching and inspiring and I would recommend it to anyone.
