James and Jonathan found Gerald Constantine outside at his shooting range. They came up from behind him cautiously. The last thing they wanted was to be shot on accident.
“Mr. Constantine.” James called out over the loud gunshots. Surprisingly enough Gerald heard him very well. When he turned around he set down his gun. “Hello James.” Gerald said as he moved nearer to the two detectives. “It is nice to see you again, Gerald.” James said cordially. “I am sure this visit is of a serious nature.” He stated. “As a matter of fact it is.”
“I should have known. You have your partner with you.” Gerald commented. “Yes, well we always travel in pairs.” Kroy joked. “I am sorry, Gerald. This is Inspector Kroy.”
“You sure do know how to make someone feel at ease, James. Considering the situation.”
“I am glad you see it that way because my partner and I have some questions that we would like to ask you. Some of them you may find hard to answer and that is understandable.” James cautioned. “Well, let’s go inside where it is warmer and more comfortable.” Gerald suggested as he led Knight and Kroy toward the manor.
When they entered the manor Mr. Constantine brought James and Jonathan in to his study. They both noticed that their manor was not as extravagantly decorated as the others. That was one thing that James respected about him. Money was not the only object. “Please, have a seat.” Gerald offered. James sat down in the chair beside Kroy while Gerald took a seat at his desk. He was quiet at first. His apprehension was note worthy. James somehow knew that Gerald had hostile feelings toward Beau. If he knew about the affair then he probably hated him with a passion. “I am sorry if I am silent, but it is very hard for me to show any emotion over Beau’s death. I refuse to lie about my friendship with Beau. There were many things I did not like about him.”
“Like what?” James asked. Gerald looked away from Knight and Kroy. It was obviously something that he had kept inside for a long time. Suddenly tears began to form in his eyes. “I trust you very much, James, and that is why I must tell you this. . .” Before Gerald could bring himself to talk, Hedy came in to the room. She was surprised to see James and Jonathan sitting in the study with him. “James, what are you doing here?” She smiled. “Hedy, this is his partner Inspector Kroy.”
“This is police business isn’t it?” Hedy asked nervously. “Would you please wait in the other room while I speak to them?” He requested gently. “Why? Is there something wrong?” There was another moment of awkward silence. “Hedy, I am going to tell him.” He sighed heavily. “Gerald no! I will not let you!” She cried. “I have to! If I do not then the wrong people may find out and I will not let Beau humiliate you all over again!” He shouted. Suddenly Hedy collapsed on to the floor crying. Knight and Kroy got up from their chairs to see what was the matter. “Is there anything we can do?” James offered. Gerald knelt down on the floor and wrapped his arms around her tightly. “He is dead now and he will never hurt you again.” Gerald uttered softly. James glanced at Jonathan suspiciously. “Gerald maybe you should respect your wife’s wishes.” James suggested. “No! I want you to know why I hate Beau Llewellyn! He violated my wife just as he did yours! Only he was blackmailing Hedy! He convinced her that if she did not have an affair with him that he would tell me about what happened last summer at his estate!”
“Gerald please don’t!” She cried as she leapt up from the floor “Last summer he forced himself on her! He ruined my wife physically and emotionally! Beau is better off dead and there is not a soul who does not feel that way!” He yelled.
“James, please do not arrest my husband! He did not kill Beau! I hope you can see that he did not mean to almost shoot him! Gerald would not hurt a fly!” She whimpered.
Knight came around to the other side of the desk and gently put his hands on her shoulders. “Hedy, I would not dream of arresting him. Beau hurt my wife too and I never entertained the thought of killing him.” James replied softly. “You promise?” She quivered. “With all my heart.”
“Thank you.” Gerald took hold of Hedy’s hand. “If you will excuse us. I am going to comfort my wife. I am sure you understand.” He said delicately as he ushered his wife slowly from the room. Jonathan turned to face his partner. “You do believe them don’t you?” Kroy asked. “It does not matter what I think. Even if he did do it, I still know nothing.” James responded sullenly.
