Many comedy movies use gratuitous nude scenes to keep theaters packed with guys and to fill in the voids left when the screenwriters run out of gross-out moments and bathroom jokes, but the movies featuring funny nude scenes here are part of what make them some of the funniest of the decade. It’s nice to see that nude scenes are being used in more creative comedic ways in comedy movies, rather than just an excuse to show skin. So from an ‘American Pie’ spoof on gratuitous nudity in R-rated teen comedies to a few nude scenes meant to make male audience members groan and then laugh, here are some of the funniest movies of the past decade featuring some of the funniest nude scenes (don’t worry, nothing is described in a graphic manner):
About Schmidt (2002) – I’ll get things started with one of the funniest and bravest nude scenes of the past decade with one of the few nude scenes on this list that doesn’t feature a toothpick-thin, young actress showing skin to get the audience’s attention, but rather ‘Misery’ star Kathy Bates, who strips down for a hot tub scene with Jack Nicholson. It was definitely one of the most liberating and talked-about nude scenes of the past decade as well as one of the funniest, as Jack Nicholson’s character finds it impossible to get comfortable in the hot tub with one of his very free and comfortable future in-laws. But as funny as it was supposed to be, it’s nice to see a real woman star in this unexpected and delightful scene.
Not Another Teen Movie (2001) – This is definitely one of the funniest R-rated teen movies featuring nude scenes of the past decade, a parody of ‘American Pie’, ‘She’s All That’, and other teen comedies of the 80’s and 90’s. The running gag and funniest nude scenes in the movie are those featuring the foreign exchange student, who’s naked in every scene she’s in (even at school), which is meant to be a spoof of Shannon Elizabeth’s character from ‘American Pie’. This isn’t one of the best movies you’ll ever see, but one of the funniest of the many low-brow spoof movies out there, and it probably has more nude scenes than any other film on this list.
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006) – And who says the funniest nude scenes of the past decade have to just feature women? This one features two very hairy guys having an extremely uncomfortable, nude wrestling match in their hotel room. All I can say is that Sacha Baron Cohen is one brave guy who will do anything for his art form after seeing him in a wrestling position that made audiences collectively groan and cover their eyes, and even though we’d love to forget it, this is one of the most memorable nude scenes of the past decade from one of the funniest movies. Cohen would go on to do even more of the funniest nude scenes of the past decade in the movie ‘Bruno’, which were even more explicit (perhaps he’s making a statement on the lack of male nude scenes in mainstream movies?).
The Heartbreak Kid (2007) – This is probably one of the funniest raunchy comedies of the past decade, with a few different funny nude scenes. However, the scene that really got the audience to laugh out loud in the theater was when Jerry Stiller was seen sharing a hot tub with a big-busted blonde whose implants seemed to be working as floatation devices. Of course this isn’t one of the best movies of the past decade, but it’s definitely one that’s full of rather shocking surprises.
The Hangover (2009) – This is one of the movies of the past decade that came out and surprised us all with a hilarious story about one wild night in Vegas. It’s one of the funniest R-Rated movies I’ve seen in some time, and one that actually doesn’t feature a lot of gratuitous nude scenes. Instead the movie just throws one of the most unexpected nude scenes of the past decade out there when Heather Graham’s character pulls down her shirt to nurse her baby in front of a room full of guys. Some may not consider this one of the funniest nude scenes of the past decade, but it’s the confused reaction of all the guys in the room that makes it priceless.
Sideways (2004) – Out of all the nude scenes on this list, I don’t know if I laughed harder than I did at one of the most memorable male nude scenes ever in what is definitely one of the funniest and best-written movies of the past decade. When Thomas Haden Church’s soon-to-be married womanizer character is caught messing around with a married woman by her angry husband, he leaves his wallet behind, which contains his custom-made wedding bands. He asks his exasperated pal (Paul Giamatti) to sneak in and retrieve it, who reluctantly agrees to, even though the wife and husband are at home. Although the two seem preoccupied, he also gets caught by the husband, who chases him back to the car in his birthday suit. It’s the positioning of the camera that makes this one of the most memorable and funniest nude scenes of the past decade, and if I had to pick the funniest, most entertaining of the movies of the list, I would definitely choose this one.
The 40 Year-Old Virgin (2005) – This is one of the funniest movies of the past decade that contains one of the fastest, most-clothed nude scenes (if that makes any sense). When Steve Carrell’s nerdy character goes out on a speed dating session, he finds it a little hard to get to know one of his prospective dates when one side of her shirt slips a little too low. There are a lot of other nude scenes in the movie, but this is one of the funniest without being extremely over-the-top (pardon the pun).
Calendar Girls (2003) – There are plenty of the funniest nude scenes you’ll ever see in one of the best movies for making older women feel better about their bodies. It’s just funny watching seemingly uptight older women try to pose for a nude calendar (covered up by strategically-placed everyday items like cakes and flower pots, of course). The young cameraman’s uncomfortable demeanor through all of this is priceless, but you’ve got to love the scene where Helen Mirren is trying to pose behind a stack of pastries when she tells the photographer, “Lawrence, we’re going to need considerably bigger buns”. And thus this funny and delightful movie can boast being one of the funniest movies of the past decade with some of the funniest nude scenes that don’t actually show a whole lot of nudity.
The Cooler (2003) – In some of the most realistic nude scenes of the past decade, William H. Macy’s awkward unlucky character and Maria Bello star in some steamy but realistically clumsy sex scenes. However, one of the best nude scenes of the movie is when the two of them are performing an act of revenge on the cooler’s noisy neighbor by simply sitting on the bed and bouncing up and down to make their own obtrusive racket. This isn’t one of the funniest movies on this list, being more of a drama, but it had plenty of very funny, poignant moments besides the much-talked about nude scenes, and it’s probably one of the most underrated movies of the past decade.
So from good movies with some of the funniest nude scenes of the past decade to some of the funniest movies of the past decade that also feature cleverly-executed nude scenes, it’s nice to see that there are filmmakers out there who use nudity in more than just gratuitous ways.
