Miley Cyrus, 17 year old singing sensation and tween idol better known to young fans as Hannah Montana has announced that she’s leaving her singing career, ditching the Hannah Montana alter-ego and going all out for an acting career. Miley Cyrus, as Hannah Montana had such hit songs as ‘Party in the USA’, ‘Nobody’s Perfect’ and ‘Fly on the Wall’ along with her own Saturday morning Disney channel hit show Hannah Montana. As Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus was a household name. Parents happily shelled upwards of $400 per ticket for their children to see Miley Cyrus aka Hannah Montana in concert.
Miley Cyrus occasionally rocked the celeb gossip world; once with her supposedly ‘lesbian’ and suggestive Myspace photos, which, in reality turned out to be nothing more than cutesy, girly 14 year old fun. Still later at 15, Miley Cyrus posed for legendary avant garde photographer Annie Liebowicz on the cover of Vanity Fair, topless and wrapped in a sheet. Miley Cyrus scandalized viewers at the Teen Choice Awards in 2009 with her stripper pole dance routine, clad in hooker thigh boots and micro shorts. All told, Miley Cyrus’ behavior could have been worse, but it could also have been healthier considering Miley’s iconic Hannah Montana role.
Miley Cyrus’ move away from her meteoric singing career toward acting, may be a big mistake, a fresh start or just smoke in the wind. Miley’s singing voice had promise; a surprisingly deep alto for such a young woman could have developed and landed Miley some choice roles in musical theater, possibly even Broadway. Unfortunately, a great singing voice and a role in a smarmy kiddie show on Saturday morning show, does not a serious actress make. Thus far, Miley Cyrus’ acting career has focused on Hannah Montana (the movie) cartoon voice-overs including Disney’s Bolt and a tired repeat of the ‘music will reunite us’ theme, The Last Song. Miley has a few teen-cheese movies in the offing.
Whether Miley Cyrus can leap the gap from music to movies will depend on her own acting alone merit, but also on Miley’s ability to take her younger fans with her or develop a new milieu of fans who like her acting. With her younger fans, Miley may be able to play her Hannah Montana success card. The issue will be whether Miley Cyrus’ fans will allow her to divorce herself from Hannah Montana. Although past its first blush of success, the show still retains many loyal fans. I predict that Miley will have to work very hard to overcome her first success with Hannah Montana. Fans don’t like change. Once cast as a child actor the viewing public often refuses to let that child actor grow up in acting (Gary Coleman, Jaleel White, Ricky Schroeder, Shirley Temple to name a few).
