The 2009 Champs Sports Bowl game scores a win with Miami vs. Wisconsin. The Miami vs. Wisconsin match-up has to make Champs Sports Bowl promoters quite happy, because they got two great teams to take the field on Tuesday night. The 2009 Champs Sports Bowl game gets started at 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday, December 29th, and should turn out to be the best bowl game so far this season. Both teams comes into this game with a 9-3 overall record and a spot in the Top 25 rankings, ensuring that at least in the beginning that this should turn out to be a very good bowl game for Champs Sports.
The Miami Hurricanes finished the 2009 college football season with a 5-3 record in the ACC and a 9-3 overall record. They ended up in third place in the Coastal Division of the ACC, just behind Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. Miami posted quality wins this season over Florida State, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma, and came up just short in overtime during a great game against Clemson. They have a nice offense that was able to put up a lot of points this season (Miami scored 380 points) and its quarterback Jacory Harris that could really spark them on Tuesday. Harris already has 3,164 passing yards and 23 touchdowns in his sophomore season for Miami.
Wisconsin had a good season as well, posting a 5-3 record in the Big Ten and a 9-3 overall record with a couple of tough losses that cost them a better bowl opportunity. Getting upset by Northwestern on November 21st set back their season, but now they will look to recover in the Champs Sports Bowl game. They haven’t beat a ranked team this season, and lost two the two opponents that were (Ohio State and Iowa) so some might say that the team is over-rated at this point. They have a couple of great players on offense though, starting with sophomore running back John Clay who has 1,396 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. Quarterback Scott Tolzien was pretty good too, putting up 2,445 passing yards and 16 touchdowns. Either way this game goes, Wisconsin will look at it as a building block to improve even more in 2010.
It’s tough to predict who will win the Miami vs. Wisconsin bowl game, but it’s clear that this could turn into a very nice match-up between the evenly compared teams. Miami has to hope that their defense can really step up on Tuesday night and limit the big plays by the Wisconsin offense. For Wisconsin, this game is going to come down to special teams, and they must make sure that they cover well on returns and take advantage of all their field goal opportunities. Kick-off for the 2009 Champs Sports Bowl is 5:00 P.M. PST on ESPN.
