Maleficent could still get her own movie! Maleficent, the malevolent fairy from ‘Sleeping Beauty’, is undoubtedly one of the best Disney villains of all time, so it will be very interesting to see a movie all about her. She’s definitely one of the Disney villains that’s extremely hard to find sympathetic (I mean, she basically puts a girl in a coma just because she wasn’t invited to a party), but she’s also one of the best Disney villains, thanks in part to her ability to turn into a dragon.
Tim Burton was previously going to direct Angelina Jolie in the title role, but dropped the project to work on the vampire movie ‘Dark Shadows’ with Johnny Depp. However, “The Fighter” director David O. Russell could pick up the project.
So could the Maleficent movie lead to a whole series of Disney movies focusing on the best Disney villains of all time? If this one works out, why not? Hopefully we’ll be seeing more dark Disney movies like this one based on Maleficent starring some of the other best Disney villains on this list:
Ursula from ‘The Little Mermaid’ – This many-legged witch is by far one of Disney’s most despicable villains, with a garden of souls and the ability to shape shift. She’s also one of Disney’s best and most fascinating villains, and I think it would be fun to see the back story of this underwater witch and the many mermaids and mermen she fooled into becoming a part of her macabre collection. Queen Latifah posed as Ursula in a Disney ad, and she would really be a great choice for the role.
The Queen/Witch from ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’ – Disney’s first bad girl is also one of the best villains of all time, a beauty-obsessed queen cold enough to ask for Snow White’s heart to be brought to her in a box. So before she transformed herself into a poison apple-peddling old hag, who was this evil queen? Where did she get her magic mirror? And what made her so obsessed with her looks? Next to Maleficent, this is one of the best Disney villains I’d most like to see a movie about, and I think this is another villainous Disney vixen that Tim Burton could take on. Unfortunately there are already two Snow White projects in the works focusing on Lily Collins and Kristen Stewart as Snow, and evil queens Julia Roberts and Charlize Theron will just play supporting roles (it could be kind of fun to see Anne Hathaway play a mean queen in the future, however, and Olivia Wilde has the right icy look for the part).
Chernabog from ‘Fantasia’ – When it comes to the best Disney villains, none are bigger and more frightening than this one. I’ve always been intrigued with the story of Chernabog, the giant mountaintop demon with control over the ghoulish, writhing souls featured at the end of ‘Fantasia’, and he’s definitely one of the best Disney villains for basing a whole movie on (if they can do it with ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’, they can turn the dark tale of this imposing creature into a full-length feature)
Captain Hook from ‘Peter Pan’ – Okay, so I know ‘Hook’ has been done before, but why not focus on the pirate’s adventures far away from the land of Pan? Captain Hook is one of Disney’s best comedic villains, and with the popularity of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, the Cap and his crew’s escapades and his dealings with his tick-tocking crocodile foe could be another swashbuckling hit. Dustin Hoffman played him in “Hook” and Johnny Depp has already done the pirate thing, so maybe Tom Cruise could play the part? (He seems like he’d make a great pirate for some reason.)
Cruella de Vil from ‘101 Dalmatians’ – The ultra-rich Cruella de Vil is another of Disney’s best villains who, like Maleficent, has a life that could make an intriguing movie. Who are the other rich weirdos she hangs out with and what did she do with her life before becoming obsessed with procuring puppy fur? What other species has she terrorized? Has she had any run-ins with PETA? I think it would be a lot of fun to see a movie based on one of Disney’s best villains turned into a full-length episode of ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Eccentric’, and, who knows? Maybe Cruella de Vil could change her evil ways (for good this time). Glenn Close was great as the villain, but it could be fun to see Tim Burton direct his eccentric muse Helena Bonham Carter in the role.
Scar from ‘The Lion King’ – It’s got to be tough growing up and playing second fiddle to your lion brother that will become king, so the intense sibling rivalry between Scar and the brother he ultimately murders could make a pretty interesting movie. He’s not one of the best Disney villains to make a movie about, but perhaps his childhood would explain why he grew up so darn dastardly.
Gaston from ‘Beauty and the Beast’ – Isn’t it about time Disney took a break from focusing on perfect princesses and princes and gave us a story about an arrogant, narcissistic jerk? Gaston isn’t one of the worst (best?) Disney villains on this list, but the handsome, self-obsessed, hard-drinking guy could be a fun film character (maybe he could be put in the same position as the Beast once was?). Plus you’ve got to love those triplets that follow him around everywhere (he may be a jackass, but he’s definitely one the luckiest Disney villains). Jennifer Aniston’s man Justin Theroux really looks the part for this role (but he’d have to wear a wig).
The Red Queen from ‘Alice in Wonderland’ – So what does one of Disney’s best bad villains do when Alice isn’t around? That’s what I’d like to know in a movie that focuses on the Red Queen’s role pre-Alice (kind of like what I think is going to happen with the Maleficent movie). How many people does she actually behead? What does she do with herself all day besides playing croquet? Those are a few of the questions I’d like to see answered about one of Disney’s most bloodthirsty villains. Helena Bonham Carter played her in Tim Burton’s movie, so it would be fun to see a younger actress play a younger version of the queen (maybe back when she was a princess). Mila Kunis, who has been cast as an evil witch in “Oz the Great and Powerful” would make a fun choice.
Hades from ‘Hercules’ – Who knew that Hades has such a great sense of humor? Since he is one of Disney’s funnier best villains, I think an underworld adventure would be an awesome idea (as long as James Woods played the fast-talking villain, of course).
‘Monstro’ from Pinnochio – We all love whales, but Monstro has one monstrously bad attitude. So why would a whale resort to swallowing poor puppet boys? Perhaps one of Disney’s biggest and best villains has a ‘Moby Dick’-like past? Of course I’d like to see a role reversal and Monstro turned into the good guy here, fighting against villains trying to turn him into perfume.
So here’s to hoping that the Maleficent movie is a huge success, because it’s about time Disney got in touch with its dark side by delving into the minds of its most devious villains.
