While watching horror films, you probably wondered why so many fools, suckers and bumbling idiots die. It’s a horror film, of course someone has to die! But do all the characters have to die in ridiculous, obvious ways without using common sense? I always think of what I can do to survive in a horror film. Brace yourself , for this will be a comprehensive, detailed guide on how to survive in a horror movie.
As you know, (or might not know), a recent trend in horror movies is to switch up the locations of the killing grounds. It is no longer confined to a house, or the woods, or your own neighborhood. Weapons to get killed with have also changed. Because of these changes in horror movies, this article will be broken down by location, and the weapons that you might encounter in each area.
Your own house
If there was ever a location that you can survive in, this is it! You live here, you know the layout of the floor plan. You should also know where the light switches are located, where the breaker box is. (Hopefully) The truth is that not everyone in the house knows where the breaker box is located, and this is a common way to get killed in a horror film. You also have to know your wiring of your house very well. If you have lived there for quite some time and the lights inexplicably turn off all the time, then you might have some wiring issues. However, if you have lived in your house for quite some time and you know that your wiring is great, then you have a reason to be scared. As soon as the lights go out, try to flip a light switch. If that doesn’t work, don’t turn to the closest person to you and say, “I’ll be right back. I am going to check the breakers.” That will be the last thing you will ever say. Instead, use common sense and bring some sort of light with you. And why would you want to walk about in the dark all alone? A good thing to do is to have a sense of where all the furniture is around you. In case you get pushed or knocked over, you can use some furniture to your advantage. Like a side table, a vase, or a poker from the fireplace. If you shatter glass, try to obtain a large shard of it to use a weapon. If you are still alive after the attack and not badly injured, get the heck out of your house. Don’t leave the door wide open behind you. If you have time, try to close it. When getting into a vehicle, lock all doors and floor it. If there isn’t a getaway vehicle, go for high ground. This put you in a better position to see who or what is after you, so that you can come up with a plan of escape.
Weapons are plentiful in a house. A killer will most likely use kitchen knives, sharp objects like scissors, razorblades, and even a poker from a fireplace. You also have to look out for the improvised weapons as well, such as broken glass bottles and wooden sticks. You might have a garage or tool shed outside of your house, so look out for an axe, spade, shovel, machete, chainsaw, and many other tools. You can use these weapons against your attacker as well, provided that you are quick enough.
In the woods or wilderness
Running through the woods or wilderness blindly is a bad idea to start with. Instead of panicking and stumbling about in the woods, look around for a clearing of some sort. You only have a few seconds at most to do this, so try to make it count. Your at a disadvantage when you are cornered and with no weapon. A sturdy stick or a sharp stick are your best weapons. You can try to throw some dirt in the attackers eyes, but make sure not to miss.
Weapons are hard to come by in the wilderness. Your best bet is to find a sturdy piece of wood that you can use to club someone over the head with or use it to jab at their face.
Abandoned building
This is a really bad place to be in. Whether it is the day or night, abandoned buildings always have dark areas. If you are chased or forced to go into one of these, stay in the well-lit areas. This way you can see what is going on around you. Don’t be a fool and try to lean against a wall in the dark to try to rest. Chances for survival in an abandoned building are slim, so your best bet is to quickly scan for a weapon and keep moving. If you are really stuck with no place to go, then head for the upper areas of the building. I know it may sound like a crazy idea, but this way you can hear your attacker coming towards you much better. (And hopefully able to kick them to the ground.)
Although is is dangerous to be trapped in an abandoned building, it is also filled with weapons. Look for old tools, like a rusty crow-bar, screwdriver, sheet metal, and chains. If your out in the country, you might find some old farming tools like a pitchfork. If you are in an industrial one, then keep your eyes open for metal materials around old generators. Many times these items are left behind and forgotten because there is no more use for them.
Spaceship
Getting killed in space?! Although not likely, it is possible. The inside of your average futuristic spaceship is probably not soundproof. With that in mind, keep your ears open for any sudden thuds, screams, and the wrenching sound of metal. These are good indicators that something is not right. Before you even get on the spaceship, you are going to go through some sort of training, right? Training on how to operate the ship, where everything is, and most importantly, what sounds the ship makes. So when you go into space, you are already quite familiar with the ship. Any other noises that you might hear should indicate trouble.
As weapons you have your basic knife, a gun of some sort, and a crow-bar. Sorry to say this but, you are left with improvisation to save your neck. Look out for a fire extinguisher or a heavy duty flashlight. Since you are on a ship in space, there really isn’t that much to use in the way of weapons. The best thing to do to survive is to lock all hatches behind you and to arm yourself quickly.
In the dark
Now this is a tricky one. I would stay still, give a chance for your eyes to adjust to the dark, and calm down. Once you can see, even if for a little bit, try to identify the attackers eyes. Eyes are always a weak spot on anyone. Poke at them and run for it. This puts you in a better position to figure out what to do. Feel around and try to find a wall or a corner. It sounds like I’m sending you to certain doom? Not really. At least this way you can look in two to three directions instead of four. And the lower you stay, the smaller of a target you are.
Finding something to defend yourself with is almost impossible in this situation. Since you are in the dark, this is a tight spot to be in. Feel around on the ground for pipes, sticks, rope- anything heavy that can be held in one hand and swung as a weapon.
Underground
This includes basements, tunnels, subway systems, mine shafts, and sewer tunnels. Try to move quickly and carefully, since there are many hazards all around you. Be on the look out for old pieces of wood.
Injured and Bloody
Sometimes characters get injured, or keep getting injured in a horror film. This leaves a little, or copious amounts of blood to death with. To survive longer, rip off a strip of your shirt or a piece of a clean garment and try to wrap the wound tightly. This also can stop blood from dripping, which can leave a trail for anyone to follow.
Preventing Noise
It may be a panicky situation, but above everything else, keep your cool so that you can think clearly. Acting hastily without checking the area around leads to certain death.
Dead Silence
If you happen to be in a desolate area that is normally occupied by people, then get out of there. As you escape, try to figure out what is going on. Don’t stand around and try to think, this makes you an easy target.
In a Group
There is strength in numbers. But you can also die just as easy. How? There is always someone who will trip while everyone is running, or being too loud when it’s time to escape. The best thing to do is to try to calm the person down as best as you can and tell them to follow you. If that does not work, tell the person to hide quietly and hope for the best.
With a little bit of quick thinking and nerves of steel you just might make out alive, if you were in a horror movie. It takes a tremendous toll on the emotions, as some persons under extreme stress breakdown mentally and they can’t deal with the situation. Remember, the strong willed and strong hearted have a greater chance of survival……. hopefully.
