When you are sorting through things in your closets, the decision of what to do with them is a tough one. Here is a primer on how to decide where to make the most money from your discarded items.
Some items are definitely classed as give aways. If your clothes are worn, snagged, or in bad shape, these are definitely throw away items. If you have a good dress, name brand preferably, or a man’s suit, shirt, children’s clothing that are name brand, in relatively good shape, then you should take them to your consignment shop. These shops offer a 60/40 deal most of the time, but enables the seller to make some cash for good clothes. Some consignment shops specify that the clothing must be picked up within a certain time limit or they will donate them to a charity. If you need a tax deduction, this is a good way to get that. After they donate to charity, they usually give you a slip to annotate the donation.
If you have old furniture, that is in fairly good condition, then you can consign these items, also. Remember it will be your responsibility to take them to the shop and pick them up again if they don’t sell within a specific time frame. You can make cash for these, also, but on a 60/40 basis, usually.
Yard sales are a good way to make money. If you have some small items, such as dishes, pots and pans, knick knacks, children’s toys, linens, furniture, pictures, and general housewares, this is a good way to get rid of them. You will earn the full amount for these items and will not have to share with anyone. The average hourly rate for most garage sales is low. These tie you up all day or even several days. You have to get your own cash seed money, and have to run an ad in the newspaper, put up signs, and price the items. This is time consuming, but you can realize a profit without sharing with others.
If you have a rare and old item, then you want to try the auction sites. These require little effort on the seller’s part, except taking a snapshot and downloading it to the computer. You will have to set up a payment method, usually pay pal is the best. You do not have to send the item anywhere, until it is sold and paid for. There are various decisions in this process, such as taking the highest auction bid, the lowest bid that you will accept, and where exactly you are shipping the item.
Each of these methods will earn extra money for the seller. Deciding on the time factor, the net profit, and the condition of the item to be sold is essential. Everyone wants to earn money for items that are no longer needed, but not everyone wants to invest time into their disposal. Decide for yourself.
