I recently traveled from Mexico City to San Luis Potosí to view the city’s Semana Santa celebrations and silent procession that takes place on the evening of Good Friday. The capital city of the Mexican state of the same name, San Luis Potosí is located about five hours by bus from Mexico City’s north bus terminal. Several bus companies offer direct service from Mexico City to San Luis Potosí for around $28 each way.
Many of the midrange and top end hotels in San Luis Potosí cater to business travelers and are located outside of the city center near the airport and long distance bus terminal. I was hoping to find something simple, reasonably priced and centrally located in the city’s pedestrianized historic downtown area.
After boarding a local bus and traveling the 2.5 km west from the long distance bus terminal to the city center I was pleased to find an available room at the Hotel de Gante where I spent three comfortable nights.
Hotel de Gante Location – The Hotel de Gante is situated on the corner of the Plaza de Armas in the historic downtown area of San Luis Potosí. Central San Luis Potosí is made up of four main plazas that are connected by pedestrian only streets that are lined with shops and restaurants. The historic downtown area of San Luis Potosí can be easily explored on foot. The Hotel de Gante is within easy walking distance of many of the tourist attractions, restaurants and shops in San Luis Potosí. Traffic is diverted away from the plaza and the Hotel de Gante is located in what would normally be a quiet location.
I visited during Semana Santa and enjoyed the fact that the hotel’s central location placed me right in the middle of all the action. From my room I could see the activities taking place in the plaza and I had a great view of the silent procession as it passed in front of the cathedral.
Hotel de Gante Guest Rooms – The Hotel de Gante occupies an enormous historic building on the southeast corner of the Plaza de Armas. In addition to the hotel’s 42 guest rooms there are large common areas, hallways and a furnished lobby area with a computer room where guests can check their email and work online. Each guest room is nicely furnished with king size beds, small sitting areas, high ceilings, cable television and private baths. Corner guest rooms overlooking the plaza are more spacious than the interior rooms and offer spectacular views of the Plaza de Armas, cathedral and Municipal Palace. All guest rooms are clean and quiet.
Hotel de Gante Price and Service – Room rates at the Hotel de Gante begin at 400 pesos per night, about $32. The nicest and most spacious corner rooms with views overlooking the plaza cost 500 pesos per night, about $40. Like many independently owned hotels in Mexico, it’s frequently possible to negotiate a discount for longer stays. Hotel services are basic consisting of daily maid service, complimentary coffee and drinking water and local travel and tour information. The hotel staff will assist guests with booking tours and reserving bus tickets upon request.
I didn’t encounter any problems during my three night stay at the Hotel de Gante. The front desk staff was friendly and welcoming and someone was available 24 hours a day providing added security. I felt that the services and amenities were appropriate given the cost and location of the hotel. In my opinion, it’s worth paying a little extra for a spacious corner room with views overlooking the Plaza de Armas.
The Hotel de Gante is an excellent centrally located budget option for independent travelers to San Luis Potosí, Mexico.
