Most children enjoy the idea of getting to stay up past their normal bedtime. New Year’s Eve is the perfect opportunity for your children to celebrate the New Year and have a party. For the parents, it just takes a little bit of planning and lots of coffee and your children will have a great night. Here’s how to plan a New Year’s Eve party.
This is geared towards 12 to 14 year olds. If you have younger children, allow them to be part of the festivities but this party idea is best for the tween age group. Have your child invite a few friends to their party. It will be a sleepover which the parents will not mind especially if they have plans to go out themselves.
Start the party about 7:00 in the evening. Make it clear to the parents what time you would like them to pick their child up the following day. Expect pick-up time to be around noon.
First step is to go to your local dollar store. There will be plenty of decorations. Look for banners, crepe paper, balloons, themed plates and cups and do not forget noise makers. Another find that kids really love is silly string. Get a can per child and a few extra just in case. TIP: Allow the children to go outside for the New Year’s countdown and use the silly string outside. It is a lot easier to clean it up from the lawn versus your family room.
You will need food for the party. Think finger foods. Cocktail wienies, pizza bagels, mini egg rolls and veggies and dip are all good choices. Chips, pretzels and other snack foods are necessary. Many of these items are on sale this time of year so you can usually get good buys especially on the large packages of frozen items. Don’t forget about picking up a few items for breakfast. Mini bagels and juice or milk is a good choice for an easy breakfast for a crowd. Kids this age can fend for themselves if you set everything up for them.
Sparkling grape juice is a nice touch especially if you pick up some plastic champagne glasses. Have other drinks on hand also.
Entertaining a group of children is relatively easy. Music is a must, either turn on their favorite radio station or have their favorite Cd’s on hand. If you have a gaming system, allow them the opportunity to entertain themselves by playing games. Wii sports is great because they can play active games like bowling which keeps them active.
Designate an area of your home, either a family room or living room where the party will take place. Make sure all the guests bring their own sleeping bag or blanket. Have your child help in the decorating process. Remove all breakables from the area and make the room a place that looks festive but will be safe for the kids to have fun in.
Parents should allow the kids to have their party and occasionally check in on them. Do not hover, being in the next room with an ear to what is going on will work just fine. Plan on playing cards together or entertain yourselves by watching a movie expecting that you will have frequent interruptions.
After the New Year countdown, allow the kids to finish up with their silly string and noise makers. Bring them back inside and allow them to wind down. Help them to set up their sleeping bags and encourage a movie to help them to wind down and eventually go to sleep. Most tweens will start to go to sleep by 1 a.m. If by 2:00 they are still being loud, firmly encourage them that it is time to lay down and turn down the noise level. This is where the coffee comes in handy.
Once the kids are settled in and sleeping, the partying is over and the parents can get some sleep. Morning will come quickly. Set up the breakfast items so that as the kids wake up there will be food ready for them.
Once the kids have been picked up, the clean-up will begin. You survived a New Year’s Eve party for your kids and you gave them a good night that they will remember.
