The Hope for Haiti telethon raised $58 million so far. The Hope for Haiti telethons was the brain child of George Clooney, and raised a ton of money through donations that will now help the victims of the recent Haitian earthquake. Setting aside time from their busy schedules dozens of stars from across the entertainment industry showed up for the Hope for Haiti telethon, and turned it into a record breaking number of donations. The $58 million was also just a preliminary total, as it has been reported by CNN that donations are still pouring into the cause, which expects the total to easily pass $60 million very soon.
During the Hope for Haiti telethon on Friday night, stars from music, television, film, and just about any other genre you can think of came to the studio to help raise money for those who were suffering the after effects of the recent earthquake in Haiti. Some of the stars simply used their names and super star status to answer phones, while others performed on stage with musical numbers ranging from spiritually lifting songs to somber ballads. Leonardo DiCaprio, Sandra Bullock, and Tom Hanks were just some of the seemingly hundreds of huge name stars that gave up their own time for the telethon, and it has turned out to not only be worth their time, but has turned into something very substantial for the people of Haiti.
Many viewers came away enjoying the musical performances of people like Beyonce, Jay-Z, Coldplay, Sheryl Crow, Keith Urban, and even Bruce Springsteen. Some of the stars were even shown live answering calls from real people, and the ultimate praise for the event falls in the lap of George Clooney. The ability to get so many stars into one room was amazing enough, but the sheer amount of money he has helped raise is staggering. There will soon be a Hope for Haiti album with the performances on it that will have its proceeds go to the cause as well. The Hope for Haiti telethon benefits Oxfam America, Partners in Health, The Red Cross, UNICEF, the U.N. World Food Programme, Yele Haiti Foundation, and the Clinton Bush Haiti Foundation.
Bravo to George Clooney and all of the stars of entertainment that helped to make this a huge success, and kudos to all of the viewers and people who donated their hard earned money to help out the people of Haiti. This event was such a wonderful way for people to give back, and it was an even greater success than anyone could have hoped.
