The Item World in Disgaea 3 is a recurring feature of the tactical RPG series known as Disgaea. In this unusual series, every single item in the game has a dungeon inside known as the Item World. Depending on the rarity of the item, each individual Item World has between 30 and 100 levels of a semi-randomly created dungeon.
Besides gaining experience, money, and items from killing enemies, this dungeon has an additional purpose. By defeating levels of the Item World, you increase the strength of the item. In addition, each Item World houses a few enemies, known as innocents, that when defeated, allow you to transfer a specific benefit granted by that item to a different item.
The difficulty and level of enemies in the Item World depends entirely on how powerful an item is housing that specific Item World and how deep into the dungeon you have traveled. Traversing the Item World can be very dangerous, because the monsters grow more powerful with each level, and unless you have an item called a Mr. Gency’s Exit, you can only exit the Item World every 10 levels.
Item World dungeons are also unique in another way. Each level of the Item World dungeon in Disgaea 3 has randomly seeded Geo Panels and Geo Blocks. Due to the random nature of these Geo Panels and Geo Blocks, it is just as likely for every square in a dungeon level to deal 60% maximum health damage to an ally standing on it as to provide a +50% boost to your characters’ attributes. Conveniently, the druid class has unique abilities that allow a character of that class to ignore the penalties of Geo Panels and Geo Blocks or to change the random layout.
The Item World in Disgaea 3 also has some additional features, some of which are new to the series. Each level of the Item World randomly has a chance of having a gate that leads to a Mystery Classroom. A Mystery Classroom is a special room where you can gain treasure, buy unique items, or potentially increase the power of the item you are inside.
Higher levels in the Item World also have unique enemies called pirates and level orbs. Pirates are a special type of enemy that arrives on a pirate ship. If you can defeat all of the pirates, you will take possession of the pirate ship, which you can later use to pirate from the pirates. Level orbs, a new feature in the Disgaea series, will increase the strength of the item if you have possession of them when you defeat the level.
While simply jumping inside of items and fighting inside the Item World can be fun, the Item World should be used for a purpose. The major purpose of the Item World is to enhance a specific item or to gather Innocents in order to improve a specific attribute of an item. Whatever your purpose for entering an item, there are a few tips that will help you out.
The most important thing to remember about the Item World is that you should always have a Mr. Gency’s Exit with at all times. If you don’t, you may get killed because the item gets too difficult, which will end your game. You are given one Mr. Gency’s Exit when you first are able to enter the Item World and you receive another whenever you defeat all of the enemies on a level that is a multiple of 10. Thus, if you are running low, find an easy item and quickly defeat the 10th level for a new one.
Almost just as important is the fact that you do not need to defeat all the enemies in order to defeat a level. If any of your characters walk through the exit portal, you defeat the level and gain the benefit to the power of your item. Every single level has an exit portal, though some have a guardian monster that you will need to defeat or use an attack that it moves it, in order to walk through the exit portal.
Unless you are intentionally trying to gain experience for your characters, the best way to move through the Item World is to walk through the portal as quickly as possible. You can usually get a character to it within one round by using a chain of throwing. You should get a masked hero or a moth and put 3 pairs of shoes on that character. The character will be able to move 9 spaces and will be able to move through enemies squares.
If a level has a gate to a Mystery Classroom, always enter the gate and take advantage of the room inside. When you return, the level will have changed and you will still need to defeat it, but it is worth it. If a level has level orbs, then make sure you have characters holding the orbs when one of your characters leaves through the gate. If a level has both a gate to a Mystery Classroom and level orbs, you can only take advantage of one or the other. Choose whichever best fulfills your purpose.
In general, you should avoid combat, with four exceptions. If a guardian monster is standing on the exit portal, you will need to kill it or at least use an attack that moves it. If a level has an Innocent, you should always defeat the Innocent before completing the level. If pirates show up, you may want the ship. Check the level of the pirates before fighting them. If they are too tough for you, simply exit rather than get killed. Finally, on the levels that are a multiple of 10, you need to defeat the Item General (or Item King or Item God) in order to greatly improve your item. If you want the Mr. Gency’s Exit, you should also defeat all other enemies on the level.
Following this advice, you should be able to quickly maximize the benefit of entering the Item World. The Item World does take a little getting used to, but a little practice, a Mr. Gency’s Exit, and a druid should make any trip a relative ease. In addition to getting good items, the Item World also can earn you specific trophies, so it is essential for anyone trying to get the Platinum Trophy for the game.
