Google Buzz’s privacy sucks, spamming sucks, and their response to the problems sucks. Google is fully aware that it’s been getting bad publicity for its new social network and is admitting to their flaws, but they decided to play the “new to this” card.
Google Buzz has faced some very harsh criticism since its launch in early February 2010, even a Google fan like myself has grievances with this social network. The major issue with this new social network is its automatic setup process that creates its user’s network for them – and leads to some critical privacy issues. Another problem with the Google Buzz social network is that it’s built on top of Gmail and the spam generated by Google Buzz has the internet throwing a big fit.
Google made an attempt to fix its privacy flaw (and fell a bit short) and speculations of Google Buzz’s Gmail spam has lead to rumors of a Gmail and Google Buzz divorce. With all of the “Google Buzz sucks” word of mouth going around, Todd Jackson, Google Buzz product manager, revealed to BBC News that they know that Buzz sucks at the moment, but they were just messing around anyways; they weren’t “forealz.” Well, that was the short version; Todd Jackson actually stated “We’re very early in this space. This was one of our first big attempts,” [BBC News]. Todd Jackson also went on to say “tens of millions” of users were “rightfully upset” and that the firm was “very, very sorry” [BBC News].
It’s great the Google admits that Google Buzz sucks and went as far as to apologize for it, but no one is buying the “we were just testing the waters” excuse for the flaws within Google Buzz’s social network. Google has the biggest ear to the internet imaginable; Google’s search engine and there are great minds working over at the Google HQ, so the half-assed excuse of “just testing” just sucks. Google is basically using an excuse similar to the “I was drunk” excuse after they got caught. Buzz was no fluke, it was a real attempt – an attempt that sucks.
With all of that being said, at least Google is trying to fix the things that suck the most about Google Buzz and it should improve as a social network if the internet ever lets Buzz live-down its bad start.
