When considering the possibility of giving a new, cuddly kitten a home the veterinarian bills are definitely one of the scariest thoughts to run across your mind. Getting the new kitten spayed or neutered can be expensive and may scare many potential pet owners away. With today’s economy who can afford to spend that kind of money on an animal even if he or she would be a great friend for a really long time. Many people don’t realize that there are some programs out there that do offer low cost sterilizations programs to people with low income.
One of the best places to start is with your local humane society, here in Michigan they will refer you to a program for sterilization of felines for only $25.00 and that will also include the kitty shots and a flea treatment if needed. The only catch is they only do it on Sundays (that means no sleeping in late), there is a limit of two cats per person, each cat has to be in their own carrier and you may have to wait up to a month for your appointment. So, basically all you have to do is call make the appointment, pay your $25.00, wait a long time for your appointment then, wait in a long line to drop off kitty on a Sunday when you wish you were sleeping in late because it’s your day off, wait all day hoping your precious kitten is fine and won’t be too mad at you and then go and pick the feline up. Whatever you do don’t be late for the pick-up because they will charge you for having to keep the kitten overnight and that could be costly. The humane society is a nationwide program so there should be one in your state. It’s totally worth it to know that your cat will never add to the over populated feline problem.
Another good way is to just type in cat sterilization programs into your favorite browser and look for an inexpensive program in your area. I just did it and well over 100,000 pages are listed, although a lot of them will probably be junk pages, I am sure there will be some useful sites listed.
Also call vets around your neighborhood because prices will vary, once you know about how much it should cost you will definitely know a great deal when you see one. Also don’t be afraid to call you local Pet Smart or other big chain of specialty pet stores because sometimes they do provide low-cost veterinary services.
And finally the last helpful suggestion is to ask to your friends about it, you just never know what your friends know. That is how we found out about the humane society and it was also the easiest method for us.
Getting you kitten or cat spayed is extremely important because there is a problem with over population and so many times kitten and cats end up homeless and that is a shame since we have the technology and knowledge to fix the problem. So take the time to look around and find a way to get that animal spayed if you are really considering getting a new best friend. It’s your responsibility as a pet owner and plus if you don’t that cat will have babies twice a year for sure.
