The new SX2840-01 mini-desktop computer from Gateway is petite in size as well as in price. The Gateway SX2840-01 comes in a sleek jet black half-width mini-tower case just over 4 inches wide and slightly less than 11 inches high. At a price of $560, as stated by Gateway, the SX2840-01 is solidly in the low-cost class for desktop computers.
So the Gateway SX2840-01 has a great price and comes in a great looking package that will fit easily in your living room. The real question though is how does the Gateway SX2840-01 perform and can it handle the typical consumer’s needs? The resounding answer is: Yes.
Gateway SX2840-01: Processor
The processor is Intel’s new Core i3-530 which incorporates both the CPU and GPU on the processor and has a clock-speed of 2.93 GHz. The i3 is a dual-core chip with Hyper-Threading capabilities making it a virtual quad-core chip. Why? This design gives the performance of a quad-core chip at the price of a dual-core chip.
Gateway SX2840-01: RAM and Internal Storage
For the petite price and the petite size of this mini-desktop, you might expect the RAM and HDD to be on the petite size as well. This low-priced mini-desktop is configured with a whopping 6 GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM, expandable to 8 GB, and a full terabyte (1000 GB) hard-drive.
Gateway SX2840-01: OS
Windows 7 Home Premium – 64-bit version
Gateway SX2840-01: Ports and Media
There is an abundance of USB ports (5 in front and 4 in back), 2 PS/2 ports, VGA, an HDMI port on the back, a FireWire port on the front, eSATA, a total of 5 audio ports and an optical S/PDIF port. The optical drive is a dual-layer 16X DVD+/–RW and there is even a multiple format Digital Media Card Reader. Blu-ray and a DVI port are not included.
Gateway SX2840-01: Networking and Graphics
A standard Ethernet port is included although wireless networking is not built-in. The graphics card is the Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD which shares the main memory. GMA X4500 HD performs well in most home theater, photo and video applications.
Gateway SX2840-01: The Cons
The GMA X4500 HD graphics card is not a good choice for 3D gaming. According to PCWorld it was able to only “produce an average frame rate of only 13.9 frames per second”.
The Gateway SX2840-01 is a nicely configured desktop with plenty of power for most consumers. The surprise is the great price.
