Futurama is a long running beloved series of a less than average main character who gets thrown into the future getting another chance to change his life around. With the new episodes up on the way, we can only look back at the most memorable episodes that really attach us to these characters. In my opinion, these are the top 5 episodes that really kept me interested in the series.
5) “The Devil’s Hands Are Idle Playthings“
This episode aired on August 10, 2003. In this episode, Fry begins to see how helpless and talentless he is and decides to make a deal with the robot devil to change his luck. Hoping to learn how to play a futuristic instrument that is extremely hard, even in that time, to win the heart of Leela, he ironically obtains the robot devil’s hands himself in a small twist of fate.
I loved this episode a lot. Throughout the series Fry gives various attempts to win Leela over hoping that she might love him back. You can tell that even though Fry is somewhat less than people would call “boyfriend material,” he is a nice guy overall and has nothing but good intentions. His nice attitude is usually overshadowed by his childlike jokes and laziness. Towards the end of this episode, it turns into a somewhat of a tragic play, and Fry once again loses his chance to once and for all show Leela what he truly feels for her.
4) “A Bicyclops Built for Two“
This episode aired on March 19, 2000. While on another delivery mission, Fry, Leela, and Bender come across another cyclops just like Leela claiming that he and her are the last of their kind. Throughout this episode, Leela blindly goes along with his desires to repopulate their planet. Little does she know that this good to be true once in a lifetime chance really is. It’s up to Fry and Bender to expose this phony for what he really is.
The reason I chose this episode was because of the way that Leela was portrayed. She began to open more and you can really see that she had been feeling alone throughout her whole life and blinded herself just to be happy. At this point, she still had no true idea of where she really came from so she believed him. This episode is just one of the small parts in Leela’s journey to find her parents and who she really is.
3) “The Why of Fry“
This episode aired on April 6, 2003. Here in this episode, we find out that there is more to Fry’s coincidental coming to the future than we had originally thought. In this episode, Fry learns his fate that he was actually sent to the future in hopes to actually save it. There was an episode in the past where he actually went further into the past and slept with his grandmother. Having done this, he was somehow resistant to the threat taking over the in the future. He then goes on a journey to save everyone he loves from giant brains.
This episode really gave a lot of respect back to Fry. Throughout the series he has been portrayed as a lazy no good talentless guy with nothing going for him. Little did everyone know that he actually saves the universe. I just thought it was nice to finally see him take everything into his hands for once.
2) “The Luck of the Fryrish“
This episode aired on March 11, 2001 In this episode, Fry and the gang are taken underground to old New York where Fry uncovers many memories of his old life and his family. He begins to remember that he and his brother were fighting of a lucky clover that always gave the owner the upper hand. Fry, after having a huge dispute with brother, hides the clover in a old album. Never to be seen again because of his trip to the future, his brother takes it for himself.
I really liked this episode. It was so touching to see that Fry was wrong along about his brother at the end. Throughout the episode, Fry goes on a journey to locate and take the clover back. In the end, Fry ends up digging through a grave just to find it. He is led on to believe that his brother took the good luck charm and took his over his identity. He found out that a person named Fry in the past was really famous for doing things that Fry once wanted to do. Little did he know that his brother actually named his son after Fry in memory of him and his love.
1) “Jurassic Bark“
This episode aired November 17, 2002. This emmy nominated episode was about the bond of a dog and his master. Fry finds the old fossil of his dog in a museum and attempts to do everything in his power to get it back. he finds out that there was technology that could clone and bring him back to life. Through fire and rain, Fry obtains his beloved dog. But, upon hearing the news that his dog lived a full life after Fry went missing in the past, Fry destroys the fossil and decides that his dog, Seymour, probably already had a new life and forgotten about him.
This is my all time favorite Futurama episode. It makes me so sad every time I see it. Throughout the episode, it flash backs to the past where we see how Seymour acted when Fry went missing. Seymour tried to get his parents to find him, he went looking all over time tracing his steps. Even though Fry believed that Seymour found a new owner, he actually waited every day and night outside his old job at the pizzaria. It flashes throughout the seasons and we see that Seymour is still waiting every day getting older and older. Seymour lives his life waiting for Fry.
These are just my top 5 favorites. Post yours and talk about them here. I know there will be more great episodes to come later this year.
