If you’re looking for the best upcoming funny movies of 2010, you’ve get plenty to choose from when it comes to unadorned, in-your-face comedy movies. With things being so tough in the country lately, it seems that Hollywood is turning to funny movies in 2010 to inject a little comedy into our difficult lives (while making us empty out our pocketbooks for a few guffaws). I don’t think any of the upcoming funny movies of 2010 on this list will be Academy Award-worthy masterpieces, but with Steve Carell and Tina Fey starring in a movie together, Kevin Smith trying to erase ‘Zack and Miri Make a Porno’ from our minds, and a stoner comedy set during medieval times, I’m sure you’ll find some funny upcoming movies of 2010 on this list to help you laugh away the beginning of the new decade:
Youth in Revolt – January 8, 2010 – This is one of the few upcoming funny movies of 2010 on this list specifically aimed at a younger crowd, with perpetual teen Michael Cera starring in this youthful and vibrant comedy from the director of the dark and twisted ‘Chuck & Buck’. He plays a boy doing all that he can to lose his virginity to a local girl, and his silly schemes will surely result in some hilarious moments. It may not be one of the best upcoming funny movies of 2010 for some of us slightly older folk, but, then again, it could just make us feel glad that those awkward times in our lives are over.
Cop Out – February 26, 2010 – And here’s one of the upcoming funny movies of 2010 that comedy aficionados are probably really looking forward to. It’s Kevin Smith’s latest comedy, and one that he didn’t write himself (but after ‘Zack and Miri’, that might not be such a bad thing). Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis will team up as two cops who take part in many misadventures, including a quest for a rare baseball card (one of the detectives hopes to use the payday to cover his daughter’s wedding expenses). The storyline of this buddy cop comedy isn’t all that intriguing, but I’m guessing it will be the interaction of Willis and Morgan and the colorful characters that they come in contact with (Seann William Scott and Michelle Trachtenberg are also in the mix) that could make this one of the best upcoming funny movies of 2010.
I Love You Phillip Morris – March 26, 2010 – This is one of the upcoming funny movies of 2010 that I hope will bring a little more to the table than just comedy, like a great screenplay and solid acting performances. Jim Carrey will be playing a married Texas policeman that completely turns his life around by becoming a con man; spending time in prison; and falling in love with a male inmate (Ewan McGregor), which leads him on a series of cons that get bigger and bigger in pursuit of the love of his life. It’s from the guys that brought us ‘Bad Santa’, but I’m hoping it will be even better than that modern Christmas classic (perhaps the new perfect romantic comedy?). But with a unique storyline and Jim Carrey in a fresh new role, this is one of the upcoming funny movies of 2010 that I’m most looking forward to.
Date Night – April 9, 2010 – This looks like it could be one of the best upcoming funny movies of 2010 with a comedy dream team in Steve Carell and Tina Fey. We’re used to seeing them back-to-back on some of the best comedies on TV, so I can hardly wait to see them together. The (hopefully) dynamic duo will play a couple whose date night turns into a thrilling adventure after a case of mistaken identity. I’ve got my fingers crossed that the director whose last foray into comedy was the second ‘Night at the Museum’ movie (and who is responsible for more than one movie remake) will step it up quite a few notches for his superstar couple and make this one of the best upcoming funny movies of 2010 perfect for a romantic date night for the Liz Lemons of the world.
Grown Ups – June 25, 2010 – This is one of the best upcoming funny movies of 2010 for us grown ups that remain young at heart, especially when we come in contact with those we raised hell with in high schools years later. Adam Sandler teams up with a director he’s had a few successes with (‘Happy Gilmore’, ‘I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry’, and ‘Big Daddy’, to name a few) in a comedy that takes a look at the interactions of five high school friends that meet again after their childhood basketball coach passes away. But with the likes of Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, and Rob Schnedier starring, it looks like they’ll learn that growing old doesn’t mean growing up. I’m kind of hoping director Dennis Dugan doesn’t go too over the top here, because if he would let his characters grow up just a little, this could be one of the upcoming funny movies of 2010 that audiences really fall in love with (we do all love to reminisce about our glory days).
Dinner for Schmucks – July 23, 2010 – The director of ‘Meet the Parents’ brings us another of the upcoming funny movies of 2010 starring Steve Carell (as well as Paul Rudd and Zach Galifianakis). Rudd will be playing an executive on the prowl for the biggest buffoon he can find to escort him to his company’s “dinner for idiots”. However, karma doesn’t let him off easily for trying to subject Carell’s character to some office ridicule, as his newfound friend that enjoys making dioramas featuring dead, stuffed mice starts to make his life spin out of control. With the cast and director of this screwball comedy, it seems like this one can’t go wrong and will surely be one of the most successful upcoming funny movies of the summer of 2010.
Little Fockers – July 30, 2010 – And while Jay Roach won’t be directing this addition to his ‘Meet the Parents’ franchise (the only of the upcoming funny movies of 2010 on this list that is a sequel), Ben Stiller will be back to bring the laughs with the rest of our favorite dysfunctional family. Maybe this franchise is getting a little stale, but it’s hard to resist wanting to see how this family handles the arrival of a baby, and I think this comedy will still have theaters packed as one of the upcoming movies of 2010 that we’ll find just as irresistible as that fake movie popcorn butter.
The Other Guys – August 6, 2010 – As another of the upcoming funny movies featuring cops, it looks like 2010 could end up being a war of the pigs. Will Farrell teams up again with Adam McKay, director of ‘Anchorman’ and Talladega Nights’, as a forensic accountant more into paperwork than hitting the streets. Along with his partner (Mark Wahlberg, refreshingly giving comedy a try), they try to step up their game to prove that these “other guys” are just as good as the street cops they idolize. But of course things go terribly wrong for the bumbling duo. This cast also boasts Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Rob Riggle, Eva Mendes, and Paris Hilton, and it looks like the two upcoming funny cop movies of 2010 are going to pull the ‘Paul Blart’ vs. ‘Observe and Report’ of next year.
Born to Be a Star – September 3, 2010 – Can the director of ‘The Hot Chick’ team up with Adam Sandler as a writer in what could be one of the most entertaining upcoming funny movies of 2010? It’s hard to tell right now, but I love the premise about a nerd that discovers that his parents were famous porn stars. With Pauly Shore involved, it looks a bit dicey, but you’ve also got Christina Ricci, Stephen Dorff, and Don Johnson in the mix, so my hopes are high for the one of the upcoming funny movies of 2010 that definitely seems to be hit or miss.
Your Highness – October 1, 2010 – And when it comes to the best upcoming movies of 2010, I’m betting that this medieval comedy will be the runaway stoner hit of the year (a la it’s director’s last successful film, ‘Pineapple Express’). Danny McBride and James Franco will play two very different princes (I’m already hearing the Spin Doctors in my head now): Franco as a perfect, chivalrous hero, and McBride as a lazy slacker who enjoys his booze and wizard’s weed. However, when his older princely bro’s bride-to-be is kidnapped, he finally gets a chance to prove that he too can be a hero (although not by choice; his father tells him he has to tag along on the adventure or give up his princely lifestyle). Zooey Dechanel stars as the princess and Natalie Portman as a warrior maiden joining the two brothers on their journey in what is looking like one of the best upcoming funny movies of 2010 and the most epic stoner comedy ever.
So from stoners to porn stars to inept cops, there’s sure to be some great upcoming movies of 2010 that you won’t want to miss laughing away those recession blues to.
