We are at a lucky stage in the lives of our children. Our son is six and our daughter is four. My son wants to be helpful and my daughter wants to behave just like my son so it all works out in our favor. I had my own ideas before researching the Internet for ideas others may have to have kids involved in Spring Cleaning and many we have already practiced. If I am unloading the washer to put clothes in the dryer, my son will grow angry at me for not involving him, for example.
One other everyday thing my kids do to help is cleanse the bubbles out of the bathtub after their bubble baths. I never ask them to but I think they are attracted to the shower head. They will not let me use the shower head on them to rinse their hair from shampoo but it is an interest all the same. Hannah has volunteered herself to take out the trash when she can-usually the trash is larger than she is and she needs a little help.
One thing my sister does to inspire spring cleaning among her boys is encourage them to get toys, clothes, and things they no longer use available for a garage sale. Another option would be to gather the clothes and things thrift stores need to give to them. This would be an opportunity to teach kids about others who are less fortunate than they are though this family often visits those stores for that reason.
One website I visited had the idea of playing music while doing chores. Everything is more fun when set to music. I listen to YouTube every time I clean my house. Other ideas were to give the child a small area of the kitchen with a small broom and let them have their own area in which to clean. It is important to praise kids for a job well done even if it is a job we have to return to later. My own mother would go behind me and redo everything I did and it lowered my self-esteem. If you must go behind your kids when they clean, do it when they are not paying attention.
A fun way for the kids to work on cleaning outside the house is to have them pick up all the sticks that are in the yard. Have a contest where the person who picks up the most sticks is able to pick what is made for dinner that night. An additional fun outside tool to help with spring cleaning is to fill their kiddie pool with water so they can wash their bath toys in the pool. One more thing very small children can do is use a damp cloth to wash down appliances and move couch cushions for you to clean underneath. Smaller children can also squirt water on houseplants (mine have many times), clean the inside of windows they can reach, and dust picture frames that are also in reach.
Another fun outside activity where kids can help with spring cleaning is cleaning the ceiling fans, window blinds, shower curtains, and window screens. Squirt dish liquid on them for soap and allow the kids to use a water hose to clean the dirt off the items. Kids always love to play in the water and will especially love this activity.
