The key to weight loss is to consume fewer calories, but who wants to survive on lettuce and celery? In this article I will provide you with several low calorie foods that will fill you up. Some believe that the key to eating right and losing weight is to consume foods that have low caloric density. Caloric density is computed by dividing the total number of calories in a serving by the total weight in ounces or grams. Dieters should stick to foods with a caloric density less than 50. Here is my list of five foods that are low in calories, but will also help to fill you up.
Low Calorie Food #1 – Berries
Berries are high in antioxidants but low in calories. Blackberries and raspberries are especially good. One cup of blackberries has just 75 calories and a caloric density of 14.76 (well under 50). A cup of raspberries has just 60 calories. Blueberries and strawberries are low in calories and low in caloric density too. Not only are these berries nutritious and low in calories, they are also high in fiber and fiber helps to fill you up.
Low Calorie Food #2 – Vegetables
No surprise here. Everyone knows that most vegetables are low in calories. They are also high in fiber which helps to fill you up. It is impossible to discern which vegetable or vegetables you should eat in order to lose weight. I suggest limiting vegetables like avocados which is higher in calories than other vegetables and perhaps corn which has more sugar and is more of a starch than a vegetable. Carrots are a great choice. There is just 30 calories in one carrot. Green and red peppers, eaten raw, have just 15 calories in one entire pepper. A cup of snap beans has just 45 calories. One cup of steamed eggplant has just 25 calories. If you are dieting eat all the vegetables that you want. Just don’t add butter. A serving of butter has 100 calories and a caloric density of 200. It doesn’t get much worse than that.
Low Calorie Food #3 – Sweet Potatoes
A sweet potato has on average just 115 calories. While that may sound like a lot when compared to carrots or berries; it really isn’t that high. Sweet potatoes are packed with vitamins and they are very filling. I say if you are dieting don’t avoid this yummy and filling food.
Low Calorie Food #4 – Soup
Not every soup is low in calories but some are, and they can be quite filling. One cup of canned minestrone soup has just 80 calories and a cup of canned Manhattan clam chowder has just 75 calories. Both soups are filling and make good choices when trying to lose weight. Beef broth is also exceptionally low in calories and has one of the lowest caloric densities. 8.5 ounces of beef broth has just 15 calories and a caloric density of 1.76.
Low Calorie Food #5 – Popcorn
One cup of air popped popcorn without salt or butter has just 30 calories. This makes popcorn one of the best snack choices for dieters. There is not a whole lot of nutrition in popcorn, but if you are dieting and need something to munch on, popcorn is a good choice.
Switching to a low-calorie diet can be difficult at first. Our bodies get used to fat and eliminating it from our diet can take a lot of effort. Eliminating fat and eating high-fiber, low-calorie foods is better for our overall health and is essential for losing weight.
