Easy Sun Visor CD Holder

by tinyswot

It generally doesn’t cost much money to buy a cd holder that fits on your sun visor. The helpful organizers can be purchased for a buck or so but why should you buy one when you can make your own? Although the argument for buying might be that they are so inexpensive the argument for making it yourself includes fun as well as being able to customize it to your own style. Purchasing a cd holder means zillions of people will have one just like yours; make it yourself and you have a one-of-a-kind organizer that cost little to make.

The material you use to make the sun visor cd holder is important. Canvas, felt, denim and similar types of fabric work well but you won’t achieve desired results with flimsy or stretchy material. Avoid corduroy and other fabrics which have raised places on the material. It doesn’t take much cloth to make the sun visor, so if you sew, you could have enough scrap material to make the cd holder without purchasing additional cloth. Another option is to make the organizer from thick plastic.

No matter what fabric you’re using you’ll need a base piece which will be a rectangle nearly the size of the sun visor. Cut the fabric rectangle then hem it all the way around. If you sew you have another option: use binding around the perimeter. If you don’t sew you can create the hem by using fabric glue. If you’re sewing the cd holder you’ll attach the strap after hemming the main piece. The strap should be cut from a length of velcro. The velcro needs to be long enough so that it can wrap around the sun visor with a few inches to spare. This is sewn in the center back of the main piece, with the main piece hanging horizontally and the velcro placed vertically in the center. If you’re using a gluing method the strap can be attached later, after the cd holder is finished.

Cut several pockets to hold the cd’s. The pockets can be cut from the same fabric you used to make the main piece or you can use a new pattern for the pockets. Each pocket can be of the new pattern or each pocket can be a different color or design. Lay a cd on the cloth and draw around it. Instead of drawing a circle, as the shape of the cd, draw a square that’s slightly larger than the cd itself. The square should be at least a half-inch larger, on each side, than the actual cd, on each side, but should be a half-inch shorter in length. This will allow you to see the top portion of each cd as they are resting in the organizer. Cut these squares out and begin attaching them to the main piece of the organizer. Before doing so, hem around the entire perimeter of each one, using a machine or fabric glue. If you’re using plastic to make the cd holder it’s not absolutely necessary to create a hem around the main piece or around the pockets. If you want to, though, the hems can be made by sewing them or even using colored tape.

If you’re sewing on the cd pockets you’ll start by turning the main piece so that it is vertical. Position the first pocket at the top of the main piece, then begin laying another and another pocket on the previous ones. Overlap each pocket so that you can see about a fourth of each pocket. The pockets should be aligned all the way down the main piece. Pin these as you go along so that they’ll stay perfectly aligned. Use your machine to stitch straight down each side, catching the very edge of each pocket, and removing the pins as you go along. If you’re using the gluing method position the first pocket and glue it in place. Spread glue on three sides of the next pocket and position it. Continue gluing on the next and the next pocket until they are all in place. Allow the glue to dry for at least 24 hours before placing cd’s in the finished holder.

To attach the cd holder first turn the sun visor down. Hold the pockets in place as you wrap one end of the velcro over the top and the other end around the bottom of the visor. Slide the cd’s in to store them. The new cd holder is the perfect way to keep your music in order inside your vehicle. It’s easy to make the exact same cd holder no matter what make or model your vehicle – as long as it has sun visors. You’ll enjoy the new organizer which will be of service to you for years to come.
