For my first public speaker analysis I chose to go to The Mayo Civic Center at 3 P.M. on October 13, 2006 to listen to Doctor Will Kirby who practices clinical and cosmetic dermatology in Los Angeles. Doctor Kirby has been a licensed physician in California since 2002 and he has three offices in California. He talked about the reality shows he’s been on, like Big Brother, Big Brother All Stars, and E! Dr. 90210. He also mentioned some of the doctors he’s worked with and some of the skin condition he treats. Dr. Kirby also gave the audience some examples of cases he has seen in the past, like the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which eighty percent of people either have or will have it.
He performs skin exams, and he treats hair loss, acne, rosacea, herpes, and skin infection. He also performs cosmetic dermatology, which includes botox, chemical peels, facial blood vessel treatment, laser hair and tattoo removal, scar treatment and a few other things. Doctor Will Kirby also treats and removes skin cancer, warts and moles. Since he was young, Dr. Will Kirby has known that he wanted to be able to help and care for people. He takes pride and feels good about himself when he is able to help some one.
People often times worry about their appearance, some a lot more than others and Doctor Will Kirby is one of the many dermatologists that treat skin ailments to help a person feel better about their appearance and their selves, which usually helps to boost their self confidence. A lot of women, given the choice, would probably want to change something about their appearance, and many already have, whether it is hair loss, acne, botox, tattoo removal and a ton of other things. People often times wish that they would look different, we search and hope and seek out change, mainly because we envy someone else or we consider change to be a good thing. Women and men often try or want to change themselves, whether it is physically, emotionally, mentally or even their gender or the color of their skin.
In Coming of Age in Mississippi many of the black people envied the white people sometimes enough that they wished that they themselves were white, because white people were treated better and had greater opportunities and privileges than black people. A lot of people strive to fit in with the crowd and the people that surround them and by changing the way they look they are able to fit in with the crowd, not necessarily because they changed the way they look, but because they feel better about themselves and the way they look.
In some cases changing the way you look can help bring up some ones self esteem, which can greatly improve a persons confidence. Confidence is everything; it gives people the courage to do things they might not normally do. It easier to respect or look up to some one, man or woman, who is confident about themselves, than it is to respect or look up to someone who completely lacks self confidence. Something that affects your skin, for example, acne, is a big deal to the people that have it and it may not seem that big of a problem for people who have never really had trouble with it, but they wouldn’t understand unless they had to deal with that problem. That goes for other skin conditions too like spider veins, rosacea and hair loss.
Dermatology does appeal to women greatly, many women see a doctor whether it is something basic or clinical side of dermatology, treating skin conditions, like rosacea, acne, herpes or for just routine skin examinations. Many women also see a dermatologist for the cosmetic side of dermatology that includes botox, lip augmentation, wrinkle fillers, ear lobe repair, scar treatment as well as many other things. And then there is the surgical side of dermatology, which includes removing skin cancer, warts and moles. Doctor Will Kirby recommends that everyone see a dermatologist at least once a year to check for skin conditions or skin cancer. One out of seven Americans is afflicted by skin cancer each year. If caught early enough, skin cancer can be treated or pretty easily removed.
I know many women who are sub conscious about their appearance and when it comes to skin, the body’s largest organ, there are many different problems that can occur but there are also way to treat or cure those problems. Being able to see a dermatologist to treat or cure those problems may help many women feel better about them selves and not just women but men too. Skin cancer is one of the most serious problems that may go wrong with some ones skin, so seeing a doctor should appeal to people so that the dermatologist can treat it or remove it in time. Some of the more serious skin problems, like skin cancer, not only affect the person who has it, but also their family and friends.
Dermatology is an important part of our world, whether people see a dermatologist for cosmetic reasons or to help take care of their own skin. Just about everyone wishes that they had clear, perfect skin and there are ways that skin problems can be treated or even cured. People are always changing various things about them selves and to be able to take care of a skin problem some one might have can help them feel better and more confident in them selves as a person. If people think they look good or better than they used too, then their self esteem usually raises itself and other people tend to notice another person with a new found self confidence.
Most people can use more confidence or could definitely stand to feel better about them selves, so if dermatology can help them with that, then it is all the more reason for them to see a dermatologist. Confidence builds character, helps us in life, helps make us who we are and helps to shape who we might become. The books that we read in class are about strong confident women who accomplish great things, so we as humans should do what need to boost our self esteem and our confidence, even it is seeing a dermatologist to help treat or cure a skin condition.
