I am a lover of wine, Red, white, Rose I have savored all kinds. Although I would prefer to indulge in a $150.00 bottle of a Malaga Ed De Torres Cavadanga, 1939 from Spain (Cabernet Savignon). I can’t always afford to treat my senses with such a lush prize.
This is when I turn to my local wine shops that so generously offer a pretty nice selection of normally moderately priced wines, for discount prices. If you live in the Nashville area you must take a trip to all three of these wine wonderlands. I am also here to tell you that every once and a while you need to strip down your ego and partake in trying “wine in a box” Read my review on Colonial Liquors for more details. The one thing I don’t like about Nashville id that the wine shops are not open on Sundays.
Frugal MacDoogal – 701 Division Street
This is a huge wine and liquor warehouse, located in The Gulch neighborhood. It was voted “Best Liquor Store in Nashville 2009” They have so many varietals of wine you could literally be in there all day strolling the aisles just browsing titles. They have unbelievable deals on wine that are sometimes more than half of the normal selling price. For instance, Mark West California Pinot Noir, a lush fruity wine with a hint of vanilla and oak for only $10.99 other shops sell it for $19.99. They also have in store tastings and event planning. The staff is impeccable with their knowledge of wine and customer service. Hours of operation are Monday – Thursday 8:00 am – 1:00 pm, Saturday 8:00 am – 11:00. There is a large free parking lot.
Bud’s Discount Wine & Liquors – 2139 Abbott Martin Road
A Green Hills Institution, this unpretentious wine boutique is the perfect alternative to the larger shops. The workers are so funny and friendly you want to take a trip just to visit with them. They have daily wine specials like one of my all time favorites, Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin for only $9.99, some competitors sell for double the price. They also have a “bargain bin” which usually always includes the Bohemian Cabernet Savignon for $4.99. Most people would turn their nose up to such a cheap deal, however it is quite enjoyable. The hours of operation are Monday – Saturday 8:00 am – 9:30 pm, free parking.
Colonial Liquors – 2401 Franklin Pike
Hidden Away right off of the 12 South area, this is hands down the best place to attain your wine selection. Now get this, in the window as you pull up is a sign “wines, 3 for $10.99”. They have a large wall of grapes on display from brands like Gato Negro to Fish Eye to yes I will say it, Almaden Boxed Wine in three different varietals. I recommend you try the “box of wine” it is flavorful, not a bad vine no matter if you get the mountain Chablis or merlot. The bonus is each box contains 20, 6 ounce glasses. Not only do they offer this unfathomable arrangement they will carry out your goodies to your car for you free of charge. They provide a parking lot as well.
