With the arrival of summer, all the winter bedding and heavy curtains are put away. The sunshine pouring into the room makes everyone wish the room looked different. Decorating to celebrate the oncoming summer season isn’t difficult or expensive.
Decide on a theme: eclectic, cottage, beach or come up with something that’s entirely you. Choose a particular duvet, curtain, painting or rug and copy that into your style.
If you don’t know what your style is, look at different pictures in magazines and online that show what a “style” is. Take your time. If there’s a certain draw to a type of furniture, the colors and the ambiance, that’s your style. You don’t have to imitate it exactly; make it your own.
This is where decorating gets easy. Taking the item you chose, look at its color or colors. Choose a main color from this and use it on the walls. Use white or a contrasting lighter color for trim around windows and doors. Use a different color for furniture or select several shades of a single color- monotone always works well.
If being able to paint the walls isn’t an option, try something else. In many rental properties a tenant can be sued if they paint the walls a color that disagrees with the property owner/manager or if it can’t be painted over easily. Get permission in writing first; bring samples of the color and a description of the paint with you. If the answer is no, then try the following idea.
Create your own wall covering. This won’t be permanent and can be removed when you move. Mount curtain rods at the top of the wall. Hang colorful sheets from them and attach curtain weights at the bottom to help everything hang straight. Remember that when you move, the curtain rods need to be removed and the holes repaired.
Furniture can also be painted any color to match décor. If you own the furniture, paint and a change of drawer pulls or feet can make it look and feel like new.
I’m going to do a beach theme in my bedroom this season. The walls will be a sea blue with a painting technique that will make the color lighten as I approach the ceiling. Once at the ceiling, I’ll continue to lighten the color with white all the way to the top, making the room feel taller.
Light white curtains and bedcovering will bring a relaxing feel to the room. Painting the headboard and furniture sand colored won’t be hard- just a gallon of paint and a little time. Changing the dresser pulls for those resembling driftwood or making them from old found wood (not as hard as it sounds) will make them unique.
Pictures of beaches and water are available at every dollar store- so the wall can be covered inexpensively. Or I can download and print them from offline.
Fresh flowers from the garden in a clear glass vase and I’m all set.
It’s easy to decorate from the seasons- just take your time and have fun.
